Ok so I tried/wanted to try the recommended emulators from this list and these were the issues:
  • Mupen64plus-next crashes
  • ares has high requirements
  • simple64 and rmg dont work
  • Bizhawk is too slow
  • I also used to use parallel-n64 and project64 but I have been told that I shouldnt use them anymore.
So, what should I use, then?

What are you trying to run? I've not experienced this many issues before with N64 emulators
The n64 roms I have are Mario 64, F-zero x, zelda ocarina of time, hybrid heaven, castlevania legacy of darkness, goldeneye 007, mystical ninja starring goemon, diddy kong racing, donkey kong 64, banjo kazooie, and smash remix

These should all work just fine with any emulator. Is there something wrong with your drivers?

NGL, I feel like this might be more of a factor but I could be wrong. Are you running Windows? Have you tried Retroarch?
Yes, im (still) windows and yes, I tried retroarch and I already mentioned using the parallel and mupen cores there

Man, emulator issues are the worst! Have you tried RetroArch? It can handle a bunch of cores, including some from the ones you mentioned. Might be worth giving it a shot.

Parallel and Mupen64plus-next are retroarch cores

on such low end hardware you might be best served by project64, no matter how many people will say it shouldnt be used

https://github.com/pj64team/Project64-Legacy/releases

except this is the version you should be using
A follow-up to 1.6 cuz it had completely different code?
Also it seems it has been discontinued

Also, what are the differences between that and this?:

I still use Project64. I know people don't like it anymore because of the nag screen, I just really don't like the UI of any version of Mupen and PJ64 has always worked well for me.
Since it's open source, I just removed the nag screen and compiled it from source.

Isn't Parallel what people recommend now? What's wrong with it?

Edit: I'll attach the nag-free EXE for PJ64 3.0.1 if anybody wants it, since it's not easy to find one online. Just replace the EXE in a 3.0.1 install (currently the latest version)

Ask @SylverReZ , they told me I shouldnt use it
Since when did I say not to use it? Project64 is what I never recommend. Not only are older versions vulnerable to exploits, but also it has plenty of issues. You'll be better off using Mupen64 or one of the recommended emulators on the Emulation GameTechWiki page (link).

"Older versions" referring to 1.4 which nobody has used for a long time because it's ancient and has poor compatibility.

Curious, what issues does PJ64 have that other emulators don't? I mean, N64 emulation isn't perfect in any emulator, but I haven't noticed any notable issues with PJ64 2.x/3.x + GLideN64, I get the same experience as Mupen + GLideN64 just with a better UI.

pj64 1.6 in particular is vulnerable to exploits. which is highly problematic because it's also the emulator you kinda need for a lot of rom hacks that dont run in better emulators

the -legacy fork fixed the vulnerability in a later version
