i just bought a wii recently i don't know which mod chip to get and pretty much all i really need from it is playable dvds and be able to burn games. I'm really confused on the subject too because theres like 5 mod chips. The wasabi mod chip looks good though any opinions? and whats the diff between dc2 or whatever is it different versions of the wii?

First, you will have to check which chips are suitable for you, due to different chipsets.
Check in this table where your serialnumber fits. (It's at the bottom of your Wii, on a sticker)

Europe

GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LEH 100XXXXX
- LEH 101XXXXX
- LEH 102XXXXX
- LEH 103XXXXX
- LEH 104XXXXX
- LEH 105XXXXX
- LEH 106XXXXX
- LEH 107XXXXX
- LEH 108XXXXX
- LEH 10812XXX
- LEH 1085XXXX
- LEH 1089XXXX
- LEH 1091XXXX
- LEH 109128XX
- LEH 109166XX
- LEH 10979XXX

GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LEH 10889XXX
- LEH 1089XXXX
- LEH 109225XX
- LEH 10924XXX
- LEH 1100XXXX
- LEH 1101XXXX
- LEH 1104XXXX

For European models it seems the D2B chip was introduced somewhere between LEH 1088XXXX and LEH 1097XXXX.
If your serial is below LEH 1088XXXX there is a 98% chance you don't have the D2B chip.
I your serial is between LEH 1088XXXX and LEH 1097XXXX the chance you have the D2B chip is about 50%.
If your serial is above LEH 1097XXXX there is a 98% chance you have the D2B chip.

North America

GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LU 100XXXXXX
- LU 101XXXXXX
- LU 102XXXXXX
- LU 103XXXXXX
- LU 104XXXXXX
- LU 1050XXXXX

- LU 300XXXXXX
- LU 301XXXXXX
- LU 302XXXXXX
- LU 303XXXXXX
- LU 304XXXXXX
- LU 305XXXXXX
- LU 306XXXXXX
- LU 3066XXXXX
- LU 30677XXXX

- LU 502XXXXXX
- LU 503XXXXXX
- LU 504XXXXXX
- LU 505XXXXXX
- LU 506XXXXXX
- LU 5074XXXXX
- LU 5077XXXXX

GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LU 1047XXXXX
- LU 10510XXXX
- LU 1054XXXXX

- LU 3070XXXXX
- LU 3072XXXXX
- LU 3074XXXXX

- LU 50853XXXX
- LU 5089XXXXX
- LU 5092XXXXX
- LU 5094XXXXX
- LU 5095XXXXX

For North-America it appears that there are three different ranges in use (LU1/LU3/LU5).
Its possible that each range is used in a different area, factory or language pack.
Each range will have a number where the D2B chip is introduced.
For LU1 this seems to be around LU 104XXXXXX and LU 105XXXXXX.
For LU3 its between LU30667XXXX and LU3070XXXXX and
for LU5 its somewhere between LU 5077XXXXX and LU50853XXXX.

Australia

GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LAH 10067XXX

Japan

GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LJH 102XXXXX

GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LJH 1038XXXX

If it's in the compatible with first gen modchips category, you will need a Wiikey, if it's not, then you will need something else like the D2pro or Wasabi. I recommend the D2pro btw.

I looked into that but I got confused as my wii is:

LU 5427xxxxx so is it not compatible with the Wiikey as it is a first gen right?

But basically if it's first gen than wii key, if not D2pro? I will be looking into D2Pro tonight. Thanks for your help.

Also quick question am I able to play dvd movies off the wii with a mod chip? Sorry i'm a noob and i'm confused.

thing is 99$ for the d2pro9+wiiclip (which is a nice ez solution) but the wiikey is like 22$ but not so ez to install. (both with 3wing screwdrivers, no shipping) Also i dont have the tools for soldering. I do how ever feel I can and have before just been years I'll make sure to practice. I have a first gen console day 1 baby.

So am i better off with a clip on chip for that much more? I mean is it that much better support/feature wise or just ez solution for all wii's? Cause I thought I have read that d2pro9 is only upgradeable via ribbon cable?

Help me out here I too finally would like to mod my wii but dont have much to spend atm.

-Easiest to upgrade
-Best Features/Menu's/support/

thanks for the help guys, i found this website where you enter the serial number and it tells you what drive chip it is. it told me the following:

Your Drive Chip is most likely GC2-D2C.

Your Drive Pins are most likely not cut.

I also looked into the D2pro9 with wii clip, it looks like a very simple solution as i don't know how to solder very well. Found it at canada mods, the d2pro9 is compatible with my wii right?
