At the moment I have an Xenon console with a BenQ drive, with 2.0.8955.0.

What I want to do is to be able to mod this one and then also be able to mod another console when this one breaks (I've gone through five stock xboxes now, because I kept buying original fats to replace them). I now have a Xbox Slim which I want to use online, but I want to be able to play backups on the fat I mentioned above.

From what I understand, one option is flashing. I would need to buy an CKi, 360 Pro and a power supply for the drive. This could be done to multiple xboxes at the same time (a big bonus for my big house). But all games need to be burned to expensive DL-DVD.

Another is ODDE, probably xkey. From what I understand, you still need all the same kit from flashing, but the xkey will let you use a hard drive (which is convenient and saves on DL-DVDs).

The final options involve soldering and such, which is beyond my abilities, and sounds expensive to do to multiple consoles in the house (I don't want a kit to mod consoles to sell, I just want enough so all the kids can play and so I can easily just mod another console when theirs breaks). So basically the final option is to send it into a mod shop, who will mod it and then post it back.

My head is spinning a little bit from trying to understand all of this. I've learned the Wii modding instructions well enough (with Wiihacks and GBATemp), but xbox 360 modding is completely new to me. Money is an issue, so I can't afford to spend $300 per console or anything. Was hoping to keep it down to under $150.

    Thanks GTATemp :3

Best thing with less hassle is an Xkey.
Allows you to play games from an external HDD and it's pretty much maintenance proof.

If you can find someone which had flashing hardware that can retrieve keys for you then it's a big plus, since you only need to do it once.

I thought that would be the case. And my family hasn't burned a disc in years, but we deal with hard drives every day. I think you're right (and I'm not just agreeing because of the halo effect from your DP :P).

What can I use to flash? It would be nice to be able to flash too. Then if xbox dies, just take the xkey out and use it on the new one, as well as flashing some consoles for running just a few system link games.

What would you recommend to buy to flash consoles with? The Xkey site recommends the Lizard 360 (and the Lizard 360 site is full of hyperbole about how great the Lizard 360 is). Is the Lizard an all in one unit, can I just buy the Lizard and flash consoles with it, then optionally add the xkey afterwards?

    Lol xd

    I don't trust Maximus products.
    I'd go for a X360USBPro v2 and a Probe 3.
It's a connectivity kit and SATA chip in one.

That's pretty much all you need to flash a drive.
    Yeh, that and Jungleflasher.
Jungleflasher comes with a build in manual so it shouldn't be to hard to flash yours ;]

Actually, looking at the Lizard, it looks like a good piece of hardware. If it makes it easier, then that's good. Is the Lizard all I need, or do I need a Probe 3 as well?

X360USBpro v2 is the same as the Lizard, it's from Team Xecuter tho.

Probe 3 depends on your DVD drive.
If it's a Phatty Liteon then you'll need one yes.

I think I see what you mean. So really, to have a kit that flashes this console, and any other phat we come across in the future, we'd need the X360USBPro, the CK3 Lite, and the CK3 Probe?

X360 USBPro v2 is the CK3 and the X360 USBPro in one.
So it's one thing that connects the entire DVD drive ;]

The Probe 3 is used for extracting DVD keys from Phat liteons yes.

USBpro v2 it is then. I've found it online for 80USD before postage, and they have the Probe 3 for 20. How common are the lineon drives that require the Probe 3? Common enough that someone hunting for a replacement xbox 360 phat will be likely enough to find one? Am trying to decide if it's worth the extra 20 for the probe.

And thanks, you've been a big help. It looks like you help out a lot of people with xbox stuff.

Some late Falcons have Liteon 7x and all the Jasper/Kronos units have Liteon.
So yes it's worth it if you want to do it the easy and safe way ;]
Besides you can use the Probe 3's cable to connect the drive to the USBPro (probe doesn't have to be used on older/Slim drives)

    Welcomes at all times ;]
Yeh, I pretty much took over the 360 section xd
