I am looking to buy a new hdd for my wii, i currently have a Hitachi Simpledrive 1tb and it works fine no problems. I want upgrade to a 2tb to use with my pc/ps3 as well for video files. The simpledrive models seem to have been phased out and the new type of hitachi drives (LifeStudio) dont work,i have alreaady bought and returned one because it simply would not be recognised by the wii.

I have been looking around (ebay) and come across this one.....

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item5644f19697

Has anyone used this drive before with a wii or can anyone reccomend a drive that works.

Thanks

Be carefull with harddrives over 1.5GB.
They might have a 4KB sector size instead of a 512 Byte sector size.
Not all wii applications are compatible with such a bigger sector size.

I would buy one of the cheap generic SATA caddies from ebay, and a 320 or 500 WD 2.5" drive. I have had this setup on my Wii solely USB powered for 3 years and it has never missed a beat. I have had one drive upgrade to a larger drive in this time with the same caddy and never had an issue.

I could not imagine you would need much bigger than 500GB.

+1 for the cheap sata enclosures. I also use such a setup without problems.

It's an Eminent 2.5 inch portable sata enclosure
It has a Western Digital 500GB Scorpio Black drive in it.

No spindown issues. Even usb 1.1 ios can still access it.

thanks so far guys but has anyone tried one of these?

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item1c245f222c

Its on the compatibilty list but as far as i can see only 1 person has tried, its is usb 2.0 and 3.0. If someone else confirms this works then this will be the one i will go for as i have a new pc with usb 3.0 :)

That's a decent one, but I've had issues with their "My Passport" line. I switched over to Seagate entirely and I've had no problem. ^^

That shows how things are different for different people, the guy at the top says to stay away from seagate, yet you have had no problems. :)

what issues? i've had mine since wans usb loader version 1
It'll cut out and freeze the game if the cable isn't connected at a ceratin angle, and it'll randomly disconnect from my comp. Sent it in for warranty ~3 times. 320gb version. :(

Seagates are usually really really really bad. They die quite quickly, as my 1TB HDD that I got 6 months ago is already dying and this was the fate of 4 of my other Seagate drives I had. WD's are usually the higher quality ones, and you generally want to stay away from Seagates if you can.

It's not just personal preference, ask around and I'm sure many members will support my claim. I'm just trying to give you a hand :P

I agree that the new passport drives with the mini m plug are rubbish, the plug on the cable does not last long if you have to keep unpluging it. The 750gb drive also draws a lot of power and will not run from 1 of the usb's on my laptop (works from the other thank god).

I have 2 x seagate drives that both work fine

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways

@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero

but most recently, there was one that actually generates a working unity scene with terrain and textures already set up that you can import right into unity, that's a huge time saver right there
