The old 8 bit football manager games by Kevin Toms have absolutely no connection to the modern football manager games by Sports Interactive.

Ace Attorney. The rest of the series is generally pretty good, and I even like the black sheep that is the second game in Phoenix Wright trilogy (last case in particular was one of the best chapters in history of the franchise), but there's just some magic to the very first Phoenix Wright game that simply wasn't replicated since.

Same for the Zero Escape series. Virtue's Last Reward is a great continuation (though it suffers from some BS puzzles and occasionally poor pacing), and Zero Time Dilemma acts as a solid conclusion to the trilogy, but 999 is one hell of a masterpiece.

As with two examples above, I think that the whole "first game is best game" thing applies much more often to story-driven games. It's relatively easy to improve on gameplay mechanics and polish technical things you didn't have time to polish before, which makes so many VG sequels better; on the other side, it's hard to properly continue an already concluded story, which is why so many story-driven sequels either decline in quality (Silent Hill, Fallout) or avoid the issue by just making new stories altogether (Final Fantasy, Persona).

Kingdom Hearts. Although, I've yet to play the third.
Rocket Knight Adventures. The SNES follow up is still kinda cool, but I don't think I've beat it.
Jak & Daxter. Haven't finished the 3rd here either.
Luigi's Mansion. The 3DS sequel really didn't do anything for me. Haven't played the third game here either.
Gotta give another point to Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic as well.
Dead Space. And I've actually played the third, just not the DLC.
And finally, just for the voice acting, Street Fighter beats every other game in the series.

Did it really make a whole genre? Stuff like IK+ and Way of the exploding fist had already made one on one fighters huge around the world.

but they have Hadoken tho? after every fighting game has some sort of combo's .

it was a game which made you play on consoles with friends at home.... with combo's.

if you dont know what Hadoken is. this is it V

Well you do have a point but King of Fighters does everything better than Street Fighter 2 lol.

Lemmings is much beter than Lemmings 2 the tribe. Same for Final Fight being much better than Final Fight 2/3. And again with Golden Axe being beter than 2/3.

I quite like Lemmings 2 actually, though I suppose if I am allowed to include xmas lemmings and Oh No! More Lemmings I would take that over 2 in a desert island games scenario.

As for Golden Axe do we count the arcade versions here? That said I would take 2 over 1, not really done enough of 3 compared to the others. Beast Rider I reckon is actually something of an unfairly overlooked/panned game, though it probably would have done better to not have the name.

If we are back to contentious picks though. Spoke to a friend once. He would take Worms 1 (PS1 version would have been his one of choice, don't know if he or indeed I ever played The Director's Cut) over 2 or Armageddon (did anybody actually play World Party?). Said same friend did also like Hogs of War so I guess I need better friends.

Sticking with old school strategy stuff then even with the likes of http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/cf2/cf2.htm I would still pick Cannon Fodder 1 over 2, and just because I am horrible I will mention 3 as existing.

Skipping forward a few years I suppose now. Do I pick Dungeon Keeper 1 (possibly with expansion) over 2? I think it might actually.

Sticking with that era then I dare say I would do Carmageddon (with splat pack of course) over 2 or TDR3000. Now I only have a handful of hours in 3000 and it is unlikely to be anybody's pick. That said I would probably go with the one I reviewed a while back. I was going to make a joke about 64 here but even though I brought up memories of Cannon Fodder 3, and probably by extension Dungeon Keeper mobile, I don't think I am that bad.

Speaking of things popular on the Amiga brought back as awful mobile games. James Pond... now it has been a while since I played all of them and can't separate them in my head at this point but I could see 1 being it for some people. I could also do Zool but I would also have to consider the gameboy version in this which I actually quite like, even if I understand why most would not pick it.

It's funny but for me... it's completely backwards...
DKC2 was better than DKC and 3
Final Fight 2 was better than Final Fight 1 and 3
Street Fighter 2 was better than Street Fighter and 3

Viewtiful joe
Dark souls ( DKS1 is much better souls game than any of the sequels)
Toejam and earl (the sequels weren't as memorable to me and the less said about 3 the better)
Parasite eve (the second one is a third person action game I thought this was a rpg? really squaresoft?)
F.E.A.R
Half life (I didn't think HL2 was bad but I missed black mesa)
Chrono trigger
Amnesia the dark decent
