The whole copyright system needs a complete overhaul, but it will never happen, too many big companies making too much profit

Don't worry, if i ever get my time machine working, i am going back to time and first thing i going to do is form a corporation and teach those 'monks' and 'bible people' about copyright, patents, and come back to present day and be worth over trillion dollars. :)

Some heavy thought there. "Sharing without consent is fine as long as you don't take credit for yourself." Meh. Yes and no.

I did not say that, I said that self consumption is ok. Sharing with credit and without profiting is a grey area for me. I don't think it should be criminal bad, but I don't think it's nice either. It's not illegal for you to tell someone's intimous secret (that is or can be also intelectual material) but it's not nice as well.

Here's the checklist for me

Is it still in print? As in, would the original devs get the money if you bought it? If no, then it's fine. If yes, go to the next one.

Is there a highly intrusive DRM that negatively affects performance, or your ability to play it on your own time, in any situation? If yes, then it's also fine, provided you've purchased it legitimately (I consider piracy and cracking to be one and the same). If no, go to the next one.

Are the publishers shitheads who have basically bought out the company meaning that your money would only go to them, and not the actual devs? (IE THQ and STALKER or EA and most of the C&C games.) Then yes, it's fine. If not, go to the final one.

Are you going to buy it at a later date, and are only pirating it because there's either no demo, or the demo is not representative of the final product's quality? If yes, then it's fine. If not, eat shit.

Pirating just to pirate when you know you have the money, and you know you're able to buy it without it coming at the cost of other hobbies or legitimate human needs, because you just want something for free, is pretty scummy imo. There's a reason why most crackers like Razer-1911 and SKIDROW put "if you like this game, BUY IT!!!" in their installers.

No...... Don't do that.... You offended my 'pirate identity'.... I need to be now carefully carried to the GBATemp 'safe space', so i can calm down from your very offensive 'trigger words', that have cause my pirate soul to bleed....

Every game I pirate is just to test if i like the game, if I do, il buy the game.

Jk fulltime pirate here arrr.
You never buy games?
Imagine you see that collectors edition of that game you loved so much, that you perhaps pirated already.
Don't you buy it?
But look all those beautiful extras!
That artbook, that illustration paper looks so nice!
And the design of the collector editions box that opens to the side like some kind of high tech device!
And what about those beautiful keychains? And that figurine?
Can't. Avoid. Buying. Help. Me.

Piracy is fine. But I still suggest people to support the developers/creators if they got money and enjoy the product. Not to pirate for pirates sake.

Sins of a Solar Empire is a prime example for me. I would never have bought it if I didn't pirate it first.

Its a case of convenience for me. DRM is BS and companies like Valve, EA and Microsoft take an overly large slice of the pie from developers to plaster their naff copy protection over everything.

If the developer releases a DRM free version on their website like 3DRelams did with Ion Maiden then I'll buy it in a heartbeat. I also don't mind GOG though I'd prefer them not taking money from the devs. But its still a big improvement over the alternatives.

Piracy is wrong, illegal and immoral.
Then again, giving examples of sharing a newspaper in the undergroud or reading a magazine elsewhere is nonsense.

Everybody and their dog pirates something.
Nobody has ever not pirated 1 thing in their life.

I am of the belief that you ought to pay if you can afford it which is why I've more or less completely stopped pirating by now, but I can understand why someone would do it.

Well then, how about asking 25 of your buddies over to your house to watch the super bowl or the latest pay-per-view wwe event, its ok if its 24 or less, but that uninvited 26 guest appears, and bang you are a PIRATE.

Same if you own a business like hair salon, and turn on radio, ok if you have a few customers waiting, but once there over a certain amount, you are PIRATE.

I've been a pirate for most of my life due to lack of money to invest in games, so I restored to pirating most of my entertainment. Once I actually got a stable income and I was able to afford new stuff, I started buying everything and backing it up for preservation/convenience purposes. I actually owned 90% of the games on my 3DS and only pirated games that I simply could not find or couldn't find at a decent price. Unfortunately I've had to resort back to piracy as all of my games were stolen by my exes and was several hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of games I simply can't afford to replace all at once. I am buying the games back slowly over time, but there's a lot of games missing that were extremely rare and thus a pirated copy is the only way I can play them right now.
I tell this story not because I am "pro-piracy," but because piracy has been and become the only way I continue gaming in tough times. I still buy my games when I am able to, but my money has be prioritized. So really I am just neither pro nor against piracy, not everyone pirates because they can't be bothered to spend money on a game. I really can't judge people because I don't know their reason or even if there is a reason.
