It seems that every year a new R4 card comes out. 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, etc. I just want to know the difference between all of them, and how they're used differently.

I don't really know besides maybe a firmware update. I've stuck with my two R4i Gold 3DS (RTS) carts for $17 each, and they serve me well.

They have expiration dates? Never knew that to be honest. What if a new firmware and/or kernel came out?

The card just looks at the system time and refuses to boot if it's past the "Expiration"date. I guess they want you to buy more flashcards.

Haha. In all seriousness the difference is probably very small kernel patches and a sticker.
