Hello everyone, I'm wanting to get an xbox 360 again but this time I want to mod it so I can backup games I had digitally and the disc-based games I still have. I have a few things listed as a criteria though...

    • Can I mod a 360 without soldering? I don't know how to solder and I don't have a soldering kit so this will make it a bit more expensive
    • Which revision is the easiest to mod?
    • If it does require soldering, how hard is it to solder for someone who has never soldered?
    • I've seen custom dashboards and think they're pretty neat, but is it possible for a modded xbox 360 to have the normal dashboard. or even better, have the original blades dashboard?
Thank you all for helping out ^^

    Requires soldering

Get one already done - My fav is the star wars limited edition

Custom dashboards are for JTAG / RGH etc

Wouldn't that cost more than doing it myself?

Not sure which is best, but xenons and zephyrs are not the best, apparently. I just ordered an xk3y and the x360usbpro v2 for my xenon. Check out the xk3y. I got the reloaded version.

If I didn’t have an xbox360 already, I’d buy a prehacked one. 50 for the xk3y and 60 for the x360usbpro. 120 with shipping right there. A console would be another 40-60.

the older the model, the easier it is to hack the dvd drive in a lot of cases. my hitachi only needed power from sata. some of the more ridiculous are the kamikaze hack where you drill a hole through the pcb, then use liquid and I believe your finger to connect the circuit. I wouldn't advise doing something like that or rgh if you've never soldered or handled electronics in that way before. @slaphappygamer , is correct. xenon and zephyr are pretty unreliable. falcon (preferably jasper) are what you want, but it will be harder to flash the drive in most cases (not saying it's hard, but harder).

Less. RGH Slims are pretty cheap nowadays.

I was in your same shoes almost a year ago. If all you're concerned with is end product, a modded 360, and you've never soldered before then I highly suggest you buy a pre-modded 360. The reason I say that is because soldering has a learning curve and the entire process can be frustrating. I somehow bricked a 360 on my way to getting my current RGH and I'm sure I could have saved money if I sent my 360 in to a modding service.

That said, it can be a fun project if you're willing to put in the effort.

I've been told Trinity and Jaspers are among the easiest to mod and give you the best results. I went with a Trinity.

Soldering isn't too bad, but you have to get used to it. I recommend you buy some cheap test kits on ebay so you can practice on something. You may want to invest in a decent iron so you get consistent results.

Yes you can use the default 360 dashboard. I don't think there's any easy way to go back to a blades dash, but there is a FSD theme for blades dash that's pretty good.

and, FSD will look like the nxe dash. I think auorara might look like the metro dash. the dash with blades, that's FSD 1 or use a theme.

I had to repair my xenon 3 times 'til I sent it to be reballed. the guy ended up breaking the fan (would no longer spin). there's actually a dual fan inside the fat 360s. one of the blades wouldn't spin any longer. I went to usenet when the guy wouldn't send it back. I inspected it after I got it back. heh, he got lots of emails from my usenet friends attacking him, since he wouldn't give me a status report on if he could get the system working. since then, I do all repairs myself. if my system needs a reball, I pitch it since I don't have a bga machine. those go for like $800- to a grand on ebay.

oh yes, after you and @DinohScene clued me in to how unreliable the xenon is, i did some more reading. some shops specifically state they wont work on those.

I kept mine for a while. I had done several mods to it, but after that fiasco with the repair person, I stuck in a drawer. my mom made me get rid of it a year or two ago. it had a ghost shell on it. :D

btw, one thing to watch for and I was unaware of this at the time is that some people will replace parts in a system with defective parts. I once sold a flashed 360 to someone on ebay I think it was, and the guy claimed he couldn't get it to work. I checked everything when I got it back, and he still had lego indiana jones in the drive. it wasn't a burn but a regular disc. everything checked out. I offered to return the disc to the guy, but he never responded. I guess it was buyer's remorse. or something...

That’s unfortunate how you lost it. If I can’t fix it (and I’ll try my best), I’ll be ditching this one too, or keep it for parts. I’m willing to do more mods, though. Looking into making a window somewhere. I’m also looking for a ghost case for my ps2. They just aren’t out there. I’d like to show off my dms3+ chip (even though no one I live with cares).

it was my first time modding a console with a shell. the magnet in the dvd drive kept getting stuck, but I managed to fix it. it was causing the disc not to spin. anyway, I don't mod after what happened with that xenon except for controllers. it's unfortunate to put work into a console that dies. that xenon is the first console of mine to ever die of hardware failure. I think the secondary error code pointed to the infamous gpu.

Well, now I know to go for a pre-modded xbox! Only thing I need to know now is where should I get one? I'm assuming ebay, but if there's a reliable ebay seller could y'all tell me?

ebay or ioffer. ioffer is less likely to take the auction down.

Any person with some good feedback will likely do.
I'd suggest going with a Slim.
    Less chance of dying parts.

What's a good price for a rgh'd slim then? I'm seeing them for +$200 and I don't know if that's a normal price or not.

If that 200 means you'll get a upgraded HDD with it and redone thermal paste n what not then I'd say go for it.
Tbf, a hacked Slim shouldn't cost ore then 150 I think?

    Idk I never bought a pre-hacked system.

sounds a bit high unless you get a good hdd. remember, almost every 360 can be hacked, so the price should reflect that.
