Yeah that first one you picked has acceptable specs.

    Newegg sometimes has free shipping.

They make cheap computers, but AFAIK they're not known for insane corner-cutting like Acer and eMachines.

    Those are processor names.

The first one you listed is more powerful.

However the only thing you'll do that's CPU-limited is video/audio converting/editing. A better processor won't make them game better because of the integrated graphics being the bottleneck.

Protip: Stay away from AMDs when buying a laptop

AMD in laptop = lots of "burning your legs" heat

    and overheating

plus the intel "i" processors are a lot better than that penom 2 performance wise

If you right now, browse Best Buy or NewEgg from cheapest to the most expensive. Up to $450 which laptop would YOU buy?

None of them are attractive to me personally... but we likely don't have the same needs.

You ever used a Thinkpad? Things are kinda stiff, and usually business-designed. That's right at the $450 mark even before shipping, and while a Core i3 is nice, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD are kinda low-end for the price. Intel integrated graphics processing, too, although for Maplestory it'll work fine.

Not like he's going to get anything non-integrated for that price, though, and modern integrated runs 2D games fine.

Yes. And Intel HD graphics are good not high end, but good. The intel HD graphics on an asus 1201n can play TF2 on medium settings which is good for a 500 USD netbook so no saying what this can do if given the right person and opportunity. The RAM and HDD can be upgraded btw, and for not that much seeing how HDDs run about 70 USD for 450-750GB and the laptop DDR3 1066 that it is using is 20 USD for 2GB.

Edit: Plus who needs "high end" graphics on a laptop anyways, he said he was going to play maplestory. Which btw can be played on my 5 year old Dell(w/ integrated intel graphics) on high with no problem. The whole "office computer" thing could help the kid at school if he has to do a project and etc.

Intel HD graphics are actually the crappiest.

The thing is TF2 didn't come out yesterday, it's from 2007, so integrated graphics have caught up to it.

I'm not entirely dissing the integrated graphics here, and I did note that Intel graphics would still work fine for Maplestory; my laptop uses Intel's 4500MHD - lower specs than the HD, but still enough to play TF2 or even L4D2 at playable framerates. The thing is, though, that lower-cost laptops shown on the Best Buy site, while sacrificing the i3 for an AMD of some sort, had 3GB of DDR3 RAM and 320GB HDDs, as well as Radeon integrated graphics, like the one he was looking at, which was a full $100 cheaper.

I guess it's just my opinion, but the Thinkpads just look and feel too clunky for everyday use anyways. I didn't even pick up my free university Thinkpad this year because despite being a 2010 model, my 2008 Sony machine outclasses it almost entirely, and I hated the design. It's not going to help get schoolwork done faster; the same software will run on any Windows machine.

Radeon intergrated graphics are worse than the last 3 gens of intel HD graphics.

...rereading that, last 3 gens meaning Intel GMA HD4500, Intel GMA HD, and Intel HD 2000/3000.
