Gaming What's a Good laptop for me?

I want a laptop in the $700-$950 range
It needs to have a good graphics card with 1 GB of video RAM
A decent processor that would get me through recording a game while playing it at the same time without much lag
6 GB of RAM
and at least 500GB of space.
So far my ideal choice is a Sony VAIO F series laptop
but I'd like a few more options
though anything but a dell laptop, everyone in my family has used a dell laptop, and within 3 years they've become utterly useless.
Also the company needs to ship to canada, that's pretty much where I'm based when I'm not in saudi

I'd say go with a 7.2k RPM HDD or a HHD.

I've fitted my HK laptop with a HHD (4GB SSD and 500GB HDD) and I got a major speed boost out of it.
It's a 2.2 Ghz C2D with 4 GB of DDR2 RAM and a 265 MB Radeon HD 2600.

The mfg date of the laptop is 22-10-2007 if I where to believe the battery ;p and it still can compete with some new midrange laptops .

My only recommendation is avoiding Acer like the plague. Getting either a Sony, a Dell or an ASUS with a proper GFX chip on-board is a guaranteed good choice. Not so sure about Toshiba's, but I've heard good things about them. HP is also okay, but a tad overpriced.

yeah, when the i-series came out a bunch of sites were praising the intel GMA. it does work great, but only when youre using it to watch a blu ray. remember kids, drivers are everything in the gaming world.

How about, a laptop that has an OS which actually has software developed for it? How about Windows? Y'know, 'cause when you have that beefy GPU, you probably want to use it.

Are you ignorant or something? Typical Windows user who knows nothing about Mac OS X. There are hundreds of good applications available for Mac. You know that "Kawata Shoujo" Dating sim? Available for Mac. You know Sims 3? There is a Mac version. MS Office? Mac Version. Autodesk Maya? Mac version. Etc, Etc.

And if there ​isn't ​ a Mac version of what you need, then you Bootcamp Windows (Dualboot). Matter of fact I'm typing this from Windows 7. I use it to play Skyrim and Sonic Generations.


Don't underestimate the amount of Mac applications...

Perhaps I don't know many applications that are available for the Mac - I can tell you however which are not.

99% of what you see on storeshelves in any game store*.

My laptop bought a month ago has 8GB RAM and AMD integrated graphics (Radeon 6620G) and I can run MW2 on the highest settings while Fraps is running. The laptop was $600. You'll be fine with 6GB, but it's nice to have 8GB.

You do know that not all productions are available on Steam, right? And what about legacy games?

I'll ignore the stupid advice offered by the majority of posters (e.g. avoiding Acer, getting a hybrid drive, getting a mac, etc). Acer are just as good as every other company, only Seagate makes hybrid drives and they are known for their unreliability, and Mac means paying the "Apple tax" which doesn't help those on a budget.

My advice is very similar to Fudge's advice. For your price range, either look for a laptop with a GT540 and Sandy Bridge Core i3/i5, or look for a laptop with an AMD Llano APU (A6 or A8 if I remember the model name correctly) since they'll come with some half decent integrated graphics (like the 6620G) for a good price. Once you find that CPU, then you can usually find a variant with 6GB of RAM and whatever else you think you need.

No trolling involved - the OP wants a laptop that's versatile, has a decent ammount of RAM, a relatively good GPU, in a decent price range and it's likely that he wants to make use of it.

That's the definition of "Not a Macbook".

If you want to buy an overpriced piece of hardware that has limited capabilities and limited access to software, both commercial and homebrewed, that will go obselete by the time I finish typing this sentence, THEN buy a Macbook.

Acer are just as good as every other company.

No. They're badly designed, especially from the cooling perspective. They easily overheat and they suffer from loss of performance due to that simple fact.

Seagate drives? Indeed bad nowadays. Had one. Died. Not happy with'em.

As for your laptop suggestion - good setup.

Ok, I'm going to draw a line for you on the Acer debate. Name the models that have bad cooling. I'm saying this because every single Acer laptop I've ever encountered had no overheating issues. HP on the other hand... they have a terrible track record with overheating issues, which are mostly due to bad design. Now I'm not saying avoid HP like the plague just because I've encountered over 20 models with overheating issues, I'm just saying avoid those certain models.

Onus is on you to prove your point - until then, it's just trolling/bashing.

EDIT: Since it's not worth a new post... I'll add that my dad owns a 5741, my neighbour owns a 5742, and I've worked on/with a few other models with various configurations. I will also note that they all had Intel CPUs. Never came anywhere near to as hot as the HP and PB laptops I've used, most of which either have dedicated graphics or AMD CPUs.

Pretty much the entire Aspire 5738 line goes bonkers after some time, similarily you could fry eggs with the 5750. This is from personal experience, you may have a different opinion and I respect that.
