I want to show my hacks to my friend but since he lives somewhere totally different we can't connect through local play. What is the worst thing that can happen and how likely is it that it happens?
Depends, what system are you doing this on?
If it's a switch then it'd be pretty easy to see if you're running illegitimate games or cheating online.
If it's a 3DS you're virtually undetectable (unless cheating online).
In any case though whatever you're doing would probably result in a ban, but we need to know what system you're talking about before we can say how likely it would be that you're detected.

If you're using either a .CIA or a .3DS with a private header and not cheating online, then you should be undetectable and can play with your friend without worry.
If you were to cheat online or use a .3DS with a public header then you could be banned.
