Track 'n Field 2 , NES, Konami. "on your marks...get set.... PANG!"

Then there was Bayou Billy "the adventures of bayou billy!"

Those were digitised voices.

As of usefull text in a game, I'd say Battle of olympus, and Zelda 2- the adventure of link.

Those were the first I think.... ( i'm getting old....)

Good question....
The farthest back I can think is Lloyd from Tales of Symphonia.

I also enjoy trying to figure out RPGs where the main character doesn't use some kind of sword or similar weapon.

This just made me realize how many characters throughout the history of video games have been the "strong, silent type". Wow.

Sam and Max was my first Text-talky game.

But Super Mario 64 was my first actual Talky game. Bummer, I would have rather had gotten my hands on the Talky version of Sam and Max...

I dunno. Blades of Steel or Double Dribble on the NES? I didn't play it, but heard/watched before that Dragon's Lair arcade. I think those two popped up around 1987 or something, but I don't recall if I had them that early compared to say TMNT2 on the NES which was out in 1991. By then I'm sure I had something before that but not sure what, and I do know my neighbor had Gauntlet 1 which talked (nothing like Gauntlet II which lifted 100% of the digital voice of the arcade cab amazingly enough.)

I just know it was a NES game for sure, but I have no idea what it was. It had to be one of those Konami games though I got them a few years later I know it came before getting TMNT2 and Bart vs the Space Mutants which are 1990/91 era releases.

First text: Hard to remember - I'm pretty sure 'Simon The Sorcerer' was the first main character that 'talked' back to me, but I THINK 'Monkey Island' was the first person that 'talked' (to himself)
First voice: I think that was 'Duke Nukem'
