Hardware What temperature should a Switch run at? Mine runs at 50°C on most games.

I recently noticed that my Switch was really warm after playing it in docked mode so I started to keep an eye on it. When playing playing (Immortals Fenyx Rising and Super Mario 3D World), the temperature of the console ranges from 50° to 55°C, which seems warm. If it matters, I'm running CFW, but I'm not overclocking or anything. Should I replace the thermal paste in it? I read online and the articles were conflicting. Some said that it should stay around 50°, while others said it should stay below 40° on moat games. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you

When I was downloading off tinfoil for hours, I measured around 47 to 50 degree on the apu. I think anything less than 60 is normal.

Tegra X1 operating temp is -25C to 80C. Switch APU is a heavily underclocked tegra X1 (which originally runs at 2.2ghz max) due to battery saving needs (it's a hybrid handheld after all), the temps you see are 100% safe and won't cause any issue.

I bet you can safely run it continuously at 80C for 5 years+ and the point of failure will be something else than the APU.

Alright, I guess I was just being paranoid. The fan is still super quiet and all that so I guess it just runs a little warm. Thanks to all of you that answered

i have an oled switch and the temp is around 45-50c..
and for some game reaching 56c when docked (it happened for a second or 2 then the reading drop to 45c)...
FYI my switch oled is a cfw unit...
what im asked, is it normal for it to be in that temp range?
my last V2 switch run w/out thermal paste and reach 50c on dock.

Clean out the dust in the fan with a can of compressed air.

And changing the thermal paste is a good choice in the long run. Most of our switches are 4+ years old at this point.

Those two things will probably drop you back down to the 30-40 range. But 50°c is fine. My laptop gets to 90° playing games 😯

What do you mean by temp?
SoC?
PCB?
Skin?

My erista temps are in the same ballpark with TotK running + RAM overclock and 844 MHz GPU. Fan around 55%. It's normal for erista to run hotter but most of these temperatures are worthless without knowing the fan speed. For all we know it can be at 50°C and the fan is turning into a jet engine (bad, your cooling system is failing).

I've recently upgraded from an V2 locked to a Oled unlocked.

As I am running long Totk sessions on full overclock (CPU/GPU/MEM full clocks), I've purchased an dock cooling fan and I'm very surprised with the results.

Letting it running Totk in Vila Kakarico (one of the heaviest areas in the game) for about 2h docked, I've got the results:
IDLE menu and game closed:
CPU: 36 / PCB: 41 / Skin: 38

Totk 40 min running dock fan off
CPU: 61 / PCB: 65 / Skin: 54

Totk 4h running dock fan on
CPU: 45 / PCB: 47 / Skin: 42

Great investment!

That means nothing if ambient temperature is neglected.
