3ds is good for 9-11 switch for 12-15 ps4 for higher

Personally, I would ask him either directly or indirectly, choosing for him could cause issues e.g. his friends are on PS4.
ya asking is a good option also. funny story, my brother in law asked what console he could get his 12 year old nephew, I proposed one of my modded 3ds with bunch of games. he was ready to buy it from me, but then asked his nephew and he didn't even know what a 3ds is. ended up also with ps4 and fortnite.
my nephew turned out to be a fortnite junky also, but know he is 14, stopped playing it and squeezed out a better gaming pc then mine with logitech g29 and a gear stick, I can't even effort that.
