Hacking What should I check on the 3DS to know what CFW it has?

I'm about to buy a secondhand 3DS but I have no clue about the CFW thing. It says the console is on 11.6, and hasn't been banned. But now I've read a thread here from March saying that no kernel exploit is available for 11.3. Now I'm getting the sweats. Help? What should I check?

check that everything works. That's all that really matters. You can follow 3ds,guide to make sure you have the latest b9s and what not.

Seriously though, just see what's on the memory card. If you see a boot.firm, then it has some version of b9s installed. If not, follow 3ds.guide On FW11.6, chances are that it's on b9s.

By the way, kernel exploits are no longer needed because the bootrom itself has been exploited. kexploits are now irrelevant.

Is there a chance I'll be locked out completely from CFW? It's an N3DSXL with dual IPS, if that matters.
not a chance in hell. If there is no CFW on it, you'll either need an ntrboot flashcart or another hacked system that'll allow you to use the download play method. Only way to get locked out of homebrew now is with a new hardware revision from Nintendo.

Nope. NTRBoot_flasher will work with all (N)2/3DS/XL no matter what. Period.
splitting hairs, but you mean to say ntrboot. ntrboot_flasher is what prepares a compatible flash cart with an ntrboot firm, so you can then use ntrboot to launch safeb9sinstaller. You need to be hacked already to use it, unless you have a flash cart that works with your system and has a working .nds version for ntrboot_flasher.

Splitting hairs indeed. But it's okay. I would've done the same thing, just with a more offensive voice for having to respond to such stupidity ^_^
