So of course, leaving it in the car to rot under the hot sun is bad, but just how bad? My house is routinely at around 80-83 degrees Fahrenheit, that shouldn't be too much of a problem, right? And how do you solve the problem of leaving it in a car? It's a travel device, after all...

Thats hot, but its well within tolerance.
Why would you leave it in a car? Thats just in an invite to loose your DS and maybe your car.

These machines are designed to operate under harsh conditions (ie. inside a person's hands). I doubt those temperatures would fry your DS. I used to leave my old GameBoy boiling and freezing inside my dad's car at extreme temperatures and it still works great. I think if you put the DS in the oven, then you have a problem.

even if the DSL can stand such hot conditions (oven), the battery will die (read: explode) first.

you shouldnt have Li batterys above 40C when operating and above 80C when in storage, but then shouldnt you be somewhere else if the temperature is that high?

Isnt 80C about 170F? Holy crap, I just dropped my DS in the oven!! Ahhh..

Lets see, 40C is about 105F...I think its safe to say that my DS is not safe in Arizona during the summer time :'(
