I am curious. Some say retro is the only way to live, others say the more lifelike the better. Which is your favorite and why?

    Depends on the game.

    If it's a shooter? Realistic.
If it's a platformer? "Retro" is alright.

I agree with what supr posted. And cartoony RPGs are all right with me also.

Whatever the style, I think it's important that I'm able to tell what the hell is going on.

It doesn't matter how good a game looks, if I can't tell my character apart from the background there's a problem.

On the flip side, if somebody makes a game so minimalistic I have no idea how to even control it, there's a problem.

    Whatever suits the game.
    I don't have a favorite style.

actually, that's a lie. I love the style of Valkyria Chronicles. Loved it from the first scene.
Drawing a blank on what the style is called.

Anime or 3D anime? (sorry, I've only seen the box and a few screenshots.)
Also, what would you call the sort of motion/comic book style cutscenes they use in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP? I thought those were pretty neat.

No not that part. It isn't just a typical anime style, it feels very...hand drawn. I dunno, hard to describe. Watching a scene from it, it's very obvious what i'm talking about. The visual style is gorgeous.

For me it all depends on the game, some games would be better with different art styles than what they went with but for the most part I think the devs do a great job of picking what works best.

A good example that I liked for art style would be Borderlands before that game I never really got into the Cell shaded look of games. But that game seems to hit the right balance of realism VS cartoon graphics.

At the end of the day though, as long as its a fun game or at least has an engaging plot I enjoy them.

Like Rydian says, as long as I can tell whats going on I am ok with it.

Hmm, I am a huge retro lover. I love 8bit gaming, and 16bit. Getting into pox era, graphics were cool to be in 3d but kinda meh to me. I've always preferred retro style.

To me it doesn't matter so much which style it uses (I voted for "It depends on the type/genre of game...")...but that it has, and keeps, a distinctive style to begin with. You can instantly tell if someone is playing borderlands or a game of the bit.trip series. And that's a plus for me. :)

My favorite is a sort of neon style like vvvvvv, metal gear solid vr training, the levels in pac man, and the decker area in saints row 3. I don't know what it would be called though, i guess VR or Tron-ish.

Like many people have said, it really depends on the game.
But for me personally, i don't enjoy the retro look. It just feels a bit outdated for my tastes.

Cell shading if I'm not wrong.

But yeah, depends on the game entirely

I loved the cartoony graphics of DQ VIII. Amazing stuff, especially in higher resolutions thanks to PCSX2.

It depends, whatever suits it best.
Like the French Cartoon-style of Professor Layton and the 'grafiti-style' from TWEWY, these really are styles that suit the games very well.
It doesn't really matter so much to me though, as long as the gameplay and story are good.

I usually don't care, but I liked the graphics of the few cell shaded games I've played for some reason.

It really depends on the game. I do prefer retro 8Bit/16Bit overall, but Cartoony is a close second.
