    Is it even possible?

I installed BOTW and it took like 12gbs of my measly 32gbs that the black Wii U comes with. I cannot install much more, so of course I am thinking of USB. If i do install to USB how do I run the games from there? Will they just show up on my Wii U system menu? Thanks in advance!

You won't see any difference at all from them being on the internal memory. They'll all just show up on the main screen the same as the ones installed internally and they don't load or run any slower. The one thing to keep in mind though is that the Wii U for some reason doesn't deliver the normal USB standard amount of power to its ports, so its recommended to get a Y-cable for the HDD, it lets you plug the one drive into two ports for the extra power.

It's honestly best to run games from a cheap USB 3.1 stick like a Sandisk Fit. (I'm well-aware the Wii U is only USB 2.0)

They are cheap and you don't have to worry about any power issues, or taking up any space since they're stubby like a mouse receiver.

They have far more limited read/write cycles than a HDD, they'll wear out much faster. They also start to get more expensive than HDD's once you get to larger sizes.

Oh great thanks a lot for that info, I did attempt to hook up my 1TB USB HDD which is only powered by its usb cable, and to avail, it wasn't receiving enough power. Then I attempted to use my usb hub, and plug the HDD into it, and plug the hub into the Wii U, and it wasn't having it, it didn't recognize the USB Device. I do have a USB stick, but its only 16gbs, which might be only good enough for 1 game, or installing older wii games. I am going to be looking at craigslist/facebook market for a HDD with an external power supply.

Yeah, but it won't burn out for a LONG time by simply reading games from it. Install a large batch of games once, and you're golden for many years. It will honestly outlast any harddrive, that's for sure. Hell, even a cheap 2.5" SSD would be better than a harddrive for this.

I heard flash drives wear out extremely quickly on the Wii U. Any time it checks for notifications and such while in sleep mode it writes to the flash drive. You could unplug the drive when not in use but that's kind of a hassle.

It might just be that some people had bad luck with their flash drive. Still, it's worth noting, especially since save data is also stored on the USB.

An SSD would be a complete waste of money given that the Wii U is limited to USB 2.0 speeds. I don't know why you think USB sticks are more reliable than mechanical HDD's but that is most certainly not true.

I've had 8 HDDs die on me in my lifetime, and I'm 35. I've never had a USB fail on me, and I have nearly 50 of them in my house since I was 22.

Can you tell me whether the ssd needs a power supply?

And I'm 37 and have had zero HDD's fail but have had a number of flash based media fail, usually SD cards.. You have to look at the statistics of a much wider group for any kind of accurate picture. The cheap flash memory used in memory sticks isn't very durable.
