Downgrade and use Palantine CFW. It's very buggy and a lot of the time it won't boot, but that's the best you can get for free.

Here are some links to get you started. Any of those guides should work, as long as you replace any steps involving a DS flashcart with the Spider DS Profile RopLoader below (assuming you don't have a DS flashcart)

You can also use 9.6 emuNAND on a separate SD card, or even alongside CFW on the same SD card, so that you can continue using eShop.

Then I realized that they all require a connection to the internet, is there a way to prevent it from nagging to update? I figure if I connect it to internet it will ask to update first.

It won't nag to update immediately unless your version lacks the browser, in which case it'd demand to update to get it.
It would take some time in sleep mode for spotpass to push an update, and even then you can clear that.
