There were direct download links to latest versions of files, for example, AKAIO had http://filetrip.net/h7853-AKAIO.html that would always point to the latest version.

Now I can't find them anymore. They used to be in the "Get URL(s) For This File!" box, but I can't seem to find them anymore. What happened to them?

Direct downloads bypass ad revenue. That's just a guess why they're gone.

    Bandwidth isn't free.

If that were the case, why not get rid of the direct link to the specific version as well?

I need these links for FlashcartHelper to work properly.

Because the most recent version gets by far the most traffic and thus the most revenue.

    From Where???
i clicked that link and after a few seconds the file pops-up for download. did it do something different before?

that is an issue but one that isn't the fault of filetrip.net. the site will evolve and change and you can't rely on it staying the same. perhaps it is time to host those files on your own?

The difference is you see a "thanks for downloading" screen first now, which previously was skipped.
