I absolutely agree. From an aesthetic point of view nothing beats the Wii U home menu imho, especially with a dark theme (SDcafiine).
It's annoying though that there's a 300 tile limit and it's even more annoying that a folder can only hold 4 pages of tiles (=60 games).
There isn't even 300 good games for the Wii U, so it's really a non-issue.

I just can't go back to those crappy low res screens.
I've found that I prefer them to emulators. Everything looks so pixelated, and smoothing shaders are kind of ass. You either get super blocky, or super blotchy. That said, there's no way I'd play games on a non-XL system. They hurt both my eyes and my stupid gorilla hands.

My opinion on the 3ds?

heck yeah, eye straining

Jokes aside, it's an awesome console, there's some disasters here and there but still.

We've had this discussion a thousand times here already. To keep things short: If you use VC injections (especially for Nintendo DS) and/or prefer to have your Wii and/or GC games installed to your Wii U homescreen, it's super easy to hit that limit.

Needless to say that Aroma users are especially affected since homebrews are displayed as home menu icons and thus count towards that limit as well.

That's why I prefer emulator forwarders instead, and then I just load the game ROM from there.

Better than having to scroll through a big list and then manually selecting the game once you found it. Forwarders are handy for stuff like this. :P

Totally fair. But is it just that: (personal) preference. :)
I do the same though. Not only because the 300 tile limit leaves me with no other choice but since I love RetroArch for what it is.
However if it comes to Nintendo DS, the Wii U VC for it is way superior than any Libretro or standalone emulator since it natively supports the GamePad in a few cool ways so it's totally reasonable to have DS VC titles on your home menu. Same applies to Wii and GC games, especially since you can have them use the Wii U GamePad when launched from the Wii U home menu. And that leads me to the conclusion: The 300 tiles limit sucks!

I still like it. It's the last real handheld and it's got a good library of games. It's also a very good retro emulator up to SNES. Shame it can't do PS/Saturn/N64 reliably. As you said, the low-res screen isn't great but it's well suited to SNES.

It has its charm. It has a cool aesthetic and back in the day it was somewhat viable to use it as a internet browser.

But I find it unconfortable to hold. And I wish the dpad and the circle pad had swapped positions because I care more for the dpad.

but it's well suited to SNES.
This, it matches the horizontal resolution perfectly.

Streetpass in Japan when the 3DS was active was insane. We (my, my wife, and my daughter) all brought our 3DS's along to Tokyo Disney and had to take several breaks through both days (Disneyland + Disney Sea) just to clear all our Streetpass contacts. Riding a train would guarantee a ton of connections too. I completed a ton of those puzzles on that trip, summer 2013.
I loved where (handheld) gaming seemed to be heading back then. I feel like moving away from dedicated handheld is a mistake, phones be damned.

I think it's a cool piece of hardware! Gameboy / Gameboy Color / Gameboy Advance had connective ports, Camera add-on, Card readers etc. The DS has dual screens, Wi-Fi hardware. The 3DS allowed a full online experience fitting well with Nintendo's console ecosystem.
