What do you see as future for N3DS exclusives?

I have two N3DS on pre order but having second thoughts. Gateway issues aside how obsolete is the old 3DS? The new features are nice and all but my real concern is the exclusives. How fast will developers switch over?

Back in summer of 2012 one of my boys DS Lite crapped out and despite the saleman trying to talk me out of buying a DSi, I did. I knew if I got one of the boys a 3DS the other would throw a shit fit and would whine about it until he wore me down. (This one is very persistent, he will make a great lawyer or salesman). The other DS Lite crapped out the following summer and I bought a 3DS XL given that all the new games were exclusive to the 3DS. So now the DSi just sits there and is occasionaly used with an r4, but that is rare. They mostly share the 3DS, but not well and they can't do multiplayer.

They never use the 3D anymore. The camera is broken as well and that concerns me if there is a QR code exploit that emerges.

So I can spend $200 and buy one N3DS and have a small amount of whining. Buy two and they are both happy, or just buy a another 3DS XL and skip this generation, hopefully. The risk being if the 3DS craps out it will be expensive or impossible to buy an exploitable one.

    Thoughts?

3DS XL and New 3DS XL are the same generation. DS Lite and DSi are previous gen. You should see how many DSi exclusives that can't be played on DS Lite (only a handful that uses the camera I think), Comparing and 3DS XL "exclusives" to DSi makes no sense. So if I were you, given GW doesn't support it yet, I wouldn't buy new 3DS unless I care about the improved 3D.

Basically this. As of now we know Xenoblade is going to be one, however we don't know the future. I supect we will get games that are more of a hybird between the two. What I mean is that extra features will be unlocked if used in N3DSXL...kinda like the GB...GBC games; either that or there will be two different versions of the same game.

I don't think you'll see a ton of exclusive games, but I would bet Nintendo is pushing developers to use the extra power in the N3DS for exclusive features or to improve performance when using it on a N3DS (i.e. Monster Hunter). You could also start seeing many more games that would require the CPP since it is stock on every N3DS now.

If Nintendo has stopped producing the old 3DS they have a vested interest in pushing customers to upgrade or to purchase a N3DS for the first time. If every game comes out on both and are matches feature wise I doubt many will feel compelled to upgrade, especially one of the largest markets which is parents buying for children. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of first party games start having N3DS Exclusive Features! that could be as meaningless as better graphics or as meaningful as the game being exclusive to N3DS.

If Nintendo are smart, all next big games might be N3DS exclusives. Probably not 2015 ones (because most of them are probably already in developement so it's too late), but probably 2016+ ones.

They more or less failed with the DSI but they rarely fail twice in a row for a similar thing (like the 3D, Virtual Boy, then 3DS).

An exclusive pokemon could sell a lot of N3DS for example, just see how a zelda game can make it sell, even though the game is not even an exclusive game...

At least, if I were them, I would just do exclusives games from now to make a lot of money. If you do games that interest a lot of people, they won't be another choice than buying the new system to play them.

Need confirmation but I read MM will also use the c-stick on the N3DS.

You're safe for a while anyway.

As I said, 2015 games will definitively not be exclusives titles except probably a few ones that were planned for the beginning (like the xeno-something-I-forgot-the-name), it's too late. And it's just some assumptions, maybe they don't plan to do a lot of exclusives titles.

Let's remember the N3DS (and 2DS) appeared because of a patent about the 3D.

But if there are mainly exclusives games in 2016+, you have time to spare some money ;) (~10 dollars per month, and you'll have enough to buy one in 2016).

As I said, if they are smart, this is what they should do, but sometimes big company and smart are not really compatible xD

At most 6 games, but I really doubt it. Looking back at Nintendo development cycle for handled in 2 years a new "DS" will launch and all this will be obsolete.
There is no time to get a reasonable userbase for the N3DS compared with what they have already achieved with the original in the past 4 years.

It'll be FOUR years since the original 3DS was released in Japan on the 26th of this month. If the New 3DS was intended to be the successor to the 3DS then it's not exactly making me rush out to buy one. Calling it the "DSi" of the 3DS family seems appropriate but I wonder if this is Nintendo's way of extending the 3DS lifespan for a few more years or if this is the actual final one before they announce a new handheld next year (and possibly piss off the people who buy the N3DS).

I don't think Nintendo will release a new system in two years. 3DS was released in 2011, when DS was released in 2004, so near 7 years between the two, and I assume the 3DS will have, at least, a lifespan as long as the DS (but probably a bit longer one), which would be 2018 (2011+7)

So personally,I don't see a new system different before 3 years at least, so in 2018.

Except if they consider the N3DS as a new system with retrocompatibility, but we'll only know that with the number of exclusives games.

Its funny because you start saying they will not release another system in two years and the your prediction is 2017-1018. You know..2017 is two years from now.
Well DS was released at the end of 2004 in US, the european release was march 2005. The 3DS march 2011. Those are 6 years. So 2011+6=2017 seems reasonable.
Also that is the longest lifespam Gameboy Color -> Gameboy Advance took just 3 years, and GBA->NDS also 3 years.
They can as well change their schedule and make it last 10 years sure, but 2 more years for a new handled seems pretty reasonable to me.

    Here is the actual timeline

    DS
DSi: 3 yr 11m after DS
    3DS: 2 yr 3m (~6.25 Yr after DS)
    N3DS: 3yr 7m after 3DS
XXXDS: On schedule to come out in 2-2.5 years (~6.5-7 yrs after 3DS)

    p.s. 2017 is only 2 years away...

I edited it because I messed up with my calculations, 2011+7 = 2018, not 2017, so yeah, not 2 years but three (but people here answer too fast, not even give the time to edit a message xD).

I can be wrong but we'll talk about that again in two years, if you want :)

And no, I don't think the new pokemon will be an exclusive one, though they could. The next one is already in production since a while, as the last one was just a remake, so it seems too late, as it seem they took a yearly rythm.

    Pokemon Black/White : March 2011
    Pokemon Black/White 2 : October 2012
    Pokemon X/Y : October 2013
    Pokemon OR/AS : November 2014

So, if they keep that rythm, it mean the next one (which seems to not be a remake) might be released at the end of the year (I suppose them replaced Pokeradar with the navi-dex to have something to put back in the next game xD).

And it's seems pretty sure they'll keep remaking the other games when remakes sell 10 millions of units...

If they want, they can remake "Diamond/Pearl" (DS), "Black/White" (DS), and even "Black/White 2" (DS) if they don't plan to put both "Black/White" in the same game.

I personally think there will be a few more enhanced games involved. we're gonna see more and more of those games that use the extra resources. A new Mario title, maybe sth like Mario Sunshine 2 as an exclusive is possible. new Pokemon games will just be using the extra processing power, since it is pretty stupid to force people to move to the newer console imho.

It all depends on how Xenoblade and the n3DS sell, that will determine the system's life span, and whether it will be a DSi vs being a new console.

you don't need to orgasm every time you see someone who like the same thing as you =.="
