I'm new to the 360 hacking scene and with all of the JTAGs, Flashing and loads of modchips flying about, I've got no idea where to start. I have an old white fat style 360 with no HDMI, one that I fixed from a RROD.

So some things I want to know:

1. What do I need to hack my 360, and how difficult this is.
2. Can I run backups on a hacked 360?
3. What kind of homebrew is available?

It might be outdated but come on, I've made a nice sticky for this.

Since it's a Xenon brought back from an RRoD, I'd say flash the drive and play it till it dies.
It's not worth the effort otherwise.

Unless it's below 7371, then you could JTAG it (might also want to look at reballing it)

Is there a way of JTAGing it without building a silly d-sub connection? I can do that but I don't own any computer with a connector. Is there a USB alternative?

Also, the likelyhood is that if and when this console dies, i'll probably get a better model - probably something like a phat elite or something.

Well I can solder so I might try that. How are back ups run using this method, custom dashboards?

I also keep seeing people running their consoles without dvd drives. Is this a product of that, not needing them anymore because of backups?

Custom dash yep.
Everything you need to know about setting up Freestyle dash on yer 360, you can find in the tutorial section ;]

DVD drive can be removed after it's been JTAGged yep.
No issues with it.

What's the likelihood of how long my console will last? I used a rrod kit from xecuter which worked straight away.

A day, a week, a month.
No one can really tell.
Permanent RROD fixes are reballing the console (CPU/GPU/RAM)
All those other fixes are just a bandaid.

Man, 360 mods are a real pain, but the perks are many.

@gor3z the best solution would be to have someone do it for you (but not on the xenon) I would buy a cheap 2nd hand slim

Should be able to pick a rgh slim up for about £100

I was trying to get to grips before attempting it. Installing a modchip is no problem since i've got experience as a professional soldering operative in factories. I just need to understand the ins and outs of all of the jargon before going there if you know what I mean.

Ah right. You'll need the soldering equipment which you have, a glitch chip (coolrunner or similar). A way to read the consoles nand (jrp is the best way).

But as said a xenon is a pain to do and not worth the effort, if you can get a cheap slim to rgh that'd be the best idea. Its the same process (maybe a less wire to install).

Dinoh is the expert though, read his guide

All you really need is to follow me tut on installing FSD and use the TX forums to install the chip.
Nothing much to it really.

Keep in mind that if you don't reball yer Xenon, it can die at any moment.

Reballing it would probably be more expensive than the console, especially seeing as I don't have the proper tools myself. I might as well wait for it to die then get a slim.

What's cheaper, to get something like an xkey for a slim model or to flash it
I'd say go for a CR4 XL.
Best and final chip there is for the 360.

If I get that chip, is it installable in a corona model, or is the effort not worth it? Desoldering and resoldering is no problem.
