I recently installed some games to my drive, and only some of them seemed to work properly or at all. I was using usb advance for some, and then i tried opl which was supposed to be better. It was looking like it was going to load a games flashing all kinds of lights, but then just stopped at a white screen.

Different builds of OPL have varied levels of compatibility, but all in all USB loading is a terrible way to boot your PS2 games, the compatibility is awful. If you have the Classic model, you should get yourself a Network Adapter and a compatible HDD - this will give you the best backup loading compatibility and the best performance. If you have a slim and the prospect of soldering an IDE modification to it sounds like risky business, you should definitely opt for SMB network loading - the PS2's Ethernet port is far superior to its 1.1 USB and has far superior compatibility.
