with many of the .mkv files i have, i use mplayer ce to play them on wii.
but many of my keep freezing for short moments in between.
are there any other players on wii that are good for playing .mkv files?

mkv files contain reframes this means how higher the reframes how difficult it is for the processor to play decently... With some programs you can change or check the reframes..

    .mkv is just a container

what is really important is what codec the video file has

most mkv files have .h264 codec which wii has problems playing

MPlayer CE plays MKV/x264 files just fine. If you're playing video that has a high resolution or bit rate, then there's your problem; the Wii can't handle anything remotely close to HD.

hmm... I just curious. VLC as you all might know is opensource. I wonder if its possible to port it to the wii since it have quiet good MKV playback (now days).

The wii sucks the big one when it comes to anything HD, which is what MKV is mostly used for. Get yourself a PS3 + a program called PS3 Media Server. It not only lets you stream DTS mkv HD movies, it also lets you stream real blu-rays with lossless audio. Its also not a pathetic gaming machine like the wii to boot. Just a heads up.

Someone could port it but it still would have crappy .mkv playback because the Wii can do it because of it's hardware.

What about an app that can do the transcoding on the PC which will then stream to the wii?

    Would this be possible?

...um, when I think about it probably not as the Wii's WiFi speed sucks ass [IMG]

Absolutely it can! The PC can stream all kinds of wonderful stuff to the wii... Netflix, Hulu, movies, music, pics..

Oh... but wait... There's no DNLA/UPnP client for the Wii! Oh well...

Seriously even though the Wii will never be a serious media box at least it would be somewhat useful if it had a UPnP client.

Yeah, but for HD we're talking at least 2000Kb/s (or around 250KB/s) and that's a very low-end encoded 720p file!

Can the wii's WiFi connection handle that!?

What about the speed of non-HD files (I'm talking 480i)?
