So I read up while I was considering pre-ordering a 3DS from Japan... and found out that they banned the export of batteries in or with electronic devices as of 2009 some time.

I had no clue. It seems like such a ridiculous law... and it makes me NOT want to get any system from Japan anymore, unless I want to buy a battery seperately... or pay 4 times more for UPS shipping.

This is crazy.

That's a pretty weird law...

If I were you, I'd just wait for it to come out over here.

Yeah. that is what I am going to do.

At this point my chance of getting a 3DS in the Tempmas compo is shot... I can't figure out the last few clues. =(

Better start saving up.

I wonder if this means Play-Asia.com still sends batteries with their systems, though? they are in Japan, right? or rare they China?

You could always try to purchase it from another Asian country that'll import the 3DS for official sale. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore are good options if you know where to look, and they'll sell you the real thing in original packaging and such, without worries of no batteries. Or just wait for the North American release, which should only be few weeks after the Japanese launch.

Where did you read about this law? I don't recall seeing anything about it... Taiwan imports a lot of electronics from Japan, and all of them come with the original Japanese batteries, so at least I don't see the effects of this 'law' in the products within a Taiwanese electronics store.

Probably around the time they realised the electronic device could be rigged to make the battery explode (or the battery could be powering something else in the casing), or due to the TERRORISM scare.

And to the above: Maybe the law only effects normal people sending mail, and not businesses. In that case though it'd be fine to import a 3DS from a retailer and have it arrive with a bettery.

Why would you preorder a 3DS from japan anyways?

High chance you'd get the box and a letter inside saying
