Valve, the famed developer behind the Half-Life, Portal, and Left 4 Dead franchises and the creators of the Steam digital distribution service, have finally confirmed that they are entering the computer hardware business. After months of speculation about a possible "Steam Box", it looks like there was some truth to that rumor after all.

Now, while it looks like Valve's ambitions expand beyond simple prototyping, there's no saying what sort of product they have in mind. It could be anything from peripherals to a PC-like computer to a brand new console (and hey, get Half-Life 3 as a launch title and you'd have a guaranteed system seller). Really, the sky's the limit here.

So, what do you think - Will Valve make a Gabe-sized splashed in the market, or is this nothing to get steamed up over?

They should create a new standard of PC controller, with the accuracy of a mouse and feel of a 360 controller.
Talk of the Steam Box has been rumored for ages and I hardly think it's any more than just a rumor.

hmmm..i've read a lot about this.

I dunno whether this will happen, if it does happen will it sell enough units to make it profitable?

Have Valve got the cash to absorb the loss if it fails?

I think it will be a risky project if it goes ahead, but will be interested to see what they come up with.

Well, Valve does make more money per employee than Apple or Google. Now, that obviously doesn't make they're making more money than those two companies overall, but they certainly aren't strapped for cash.

I think they have enough of a base that (at the very, very least) the console wouldn't be a complete failure. With a strong lineup of exclusives, Steam-compatibility, and some other features to distinguish it from the competition, Valve's console (if they are making a console) could carve out a nice little niche for itself.

Valve Steampipe already exists. IIRC it's what they call their newish differential patching system.

If Valve makes hardware that's up to most standard of Steam Games, and is still in a "Valve Price Point", i probably wouldn't buy the next Xbox or PS
