I'm at work right now, and noticed that the WiiKey install Disc (1.9s) has some .dol files in it...

Can the TP hack or Homebrew channel be used to run these? If so, could it load a Wii/Gamecube Disc from the drive, or even the frontSD?

I won't be able to test this until I get home tomorrow, so if someone could try it? This would be a great breakthru!

They're used to update the WiiKey.

If a WiiKey isn't present, they serve no purpose.

err.

the 1.9s disc should just be in .iso format.

just burn it to a dvd with imgburn and shove it in the wii. Simple.

Yes, it's in an ISO file... but if you OPEN the iso, you can see the files it uses...

I was just wondering if the DOL files could be used for something that would bypass the Wii authentication on discs... just a theory...

Maybe you mean the Wiikey Config Disc? They have apps like DVD to SD dumper and such.
Only possible way, I assume, would be to create an app that boots into GCOS and run them through GCOS. I have no idea if this exists or if you can run .dol's through HBC.

No. First of all, this must have already been answered a gazillion times before: Wii uses DOL files, Gamecube uses DOL files. Just because they have the same file extension does not mean the one will run on the other. And they cannot be converted either.

And second of all:
QUOTEfor something that would bypass the Wii authentication on discs... just a theory...
With the Wii able to execute unsigned code for months now, with large chunks of the system's security measures figured out, with people currently working on reverse engineering the very innards of the Wii system, do you seriously think if it was that easy you'd be the very first to have that idea? Really?

Gambia, The
all the dol files on there are simply various homebrew apps and the config tool, all of them are gamecube homebrew. none of them are anything special at all.

Wow... I just had a thought... didn't need to be chastised for it... I know alot of files happen to have the same extension... .bin is the most commonly used extension...

I just thought that since the WiiKey config disc had some .dol files that were about the same size as most homebrew (500k to 3meg) it might be able to be used to help defeat the Wii authentication...

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
