Hi,

My OG Switch was recently banned due to a homebrew app that somehow found is way onto my sysMMC, and accessing Nintendo's servers. I'm curious about whether or not being banned could actually be somewhat of a good thing, depending on the situation. I know that you can still play your physical copies of your games, update the firmware, and update games through DBI or other software if the Switch is modded. And I would also assume that, since there's no more concern about being banned, you wouldn't need to use 90DNS, exosphere, the Atmosphere redirect tool, or anything like that. So, I am thinking that there could be less hassle or maintenance while still being able to run CFW.

I do have an unbanned, unmodded Switch lite that I plan to use normally for Nintendo's servers and online play.

Basically I was just wondering what others think about having a banned Switch. Is it worth it or not? Are there workarounds for updating games, DLC, etc.?

I would be interested in hearing any opinions and thoughts.

Having 90DNS or DNSMITM is still recommended in order to block accidental firmware updates, since banned consoles can download firmware updates.

Definitely worth having if it's an unpatched model. You can easily run homebrew apps and game backups once modded.

If it's a patched model, however, you can get yourself a MIG Switch flashcart or similar to play backups. Getting your games updated is a bit tricky as it requires you to have a (modded) Switch that has the newer version of the game you want to update in order to match the game versions on all consoles locally. DLC, unless they are included on the cart, are currently unnobtainable as far as I know. However, unless you install a modchip, you won't be able to use homebrew apps and similar, only the physical games you own or, if you have a MIG Switch or similar, the games that you can probably find somewhere on the Internet. You can also play in local multiplayer with another Switch console.

What would happen if my firmware updates? My banned Switch is modded with Hekate and Atmosphere CFW, so would I just update Hekate and Atmosphere, then the OFW? If I'm wrong, would turning off auto-updates help as well? And, can I use the Atmosphere redirect tool instead of 90DNS or DNSMITM?

I don't have a modchip in my banned Switch, but I installed the CFW, and modded it that way. So, would I still be able to update games and obtain the DLC by other means?
Also, may I ask what you meant by matching the game versions on all consoles locally?

You might not be able to boot into CFW unless Atmosphere and Hekate is updated, which usually takes a few days after the firmware update comes out.

Something like that, yeah. Followed by sigpatches, sys-modules and homebrew apps that you're using.

Definitely turn off automatic updates.

And, can I use the Atmosphere redirect tool instead of 90DNS or DNSMITM?
Atmosphere redirect tool is DNSMITM, so yeah. You can use it, on its own it should be enough. Or you can use both, it won't hurt. It's your choice.

I don't have a modchip in my banned Switch, but I installed the CFW, and modded it that way. So, would I still be able to update games and obtain the DLC by other means?
Of course. You can download DLC and update files from a certain websites on the Internet and install them to your Switch by using the installer of your choice.
I suggest using DBI as it personally never failed me so far. Here's a video on how to use it properly.

Let's say you have a game A on version 1.0 on your banned console and the same A game on version 1.1 on your another Switch. After that, you can press + on game A on any of your Switches and go to Software Update > Match Version with Local Users. After that, follow the on-screen instructions.

To play pirated single player games.

My Switch is hacked, and not banned, but I'm not paying 20 dollars a year for shitty online play. Yes, I know it's cheap, you can get a family plan to make it even cheaper, but fuck off, it's the principle of the matter. I refuse to support paying to use your internet to play online!

You know that the infrastructure to play online costs money, right?

For DNSMITM, I noticed that one of the guides on how to set it up said, "If you want to apply the DNS redirection to sysmmc instead of emummc, rename the file to sysmmc.txt."

Why do some prefer to use the sysMMC? What would be the difference of applying DNSMITM to sysMMC instead of emuMMC? I guess that maybe you wouldn't need an emuMMC on your Switch, which could save space, but that may be wrong. I know that it is safer to use the emuMCC for CFW, but I've read that others have used the sysMMC as well.

Before that, for sysMMC you needed to rename it to default.txt instead. It's probably fine nowadays to name it sysmmc.txt as well.

Using sysMMC CFW is useful for those that are using certain safe-to-use mods and cheats in offline-only games, as well as homebrew apps and modules. Using DNSMITM allows them to block Nintendo servers on sysMMC as well in order to avoid accidental firmware updates. Lack of SD storage is another reason, yeah.

I think I understand. So, I would be fine to just apply it to the emuMMC and keep the emuMCC offline for homebrew apps, backups, and other CFW-related stuff, and then use the sysMMC for online and regular non-CFW apps, etc.?

Definitely enable it for the emuMMC. sysMMC is optional, but I'd enable it as well just in case you get into sysMMC CFW. If you boot into stock, DNSMITM stuff won't get loaded anyway.

Good job in getting your Switch banned.
Now you can do all sorts of stuff on the (faster) sysNAND and don't have to rely on an emuNAND any longer. Congratulations. :)
