Hacking USB port as controller port

After a moderate amount of searching, I haven't found this so I figure I'd ask: Is there a mod or something of the sort that allows one to turn the USB ports into controller ports? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I dont see any reason why standard usb gamepads ant sticks wouldnt work under linux
some of the less powerhungry emulators might work at usable speed
