Hi everybody,

I have bought a Samsung Fit 256GB flashdrive because it seems to be a good choice (also practical and esthetically, not only technical) for my Wii and it worked well during some weeks, then stopped to work with USB Loader GX v1272 only (still working with Cfg USB and Wiiflow Lite). it is stuck on 'Initializing USB device'. I re-format/re-parititon several times with different tools/OS and tried with different cIOS. it is changing nothing and I am completely lost :-(

So, I am kindly asking some advices to the community : if you have an idea...

For the hints, here is my syscheck :

Note that I tried USB loader GX with all these cIOS, and only 58 and 249 (very slow for this one as USB 1.1) are listing backups. But with 58, I can't run any backup.
Cfg loader and Wiiflow are working well and fast with IOS 251 and USB loader GX is aborting 'initializing USB device' step with this one.
Nintendont does not have any issue with this flashdrive. neither Windows, Linux, Blu-Ray player or any other device.
I also tried others versions of USB loader GX (1271, 1248, 1269 mod4 by Cyan) : same results
I also tried 1272 mod6 by blackb0x, but it is worst as I have a crash before 'Initializing USB device' step.

I am usually using only 1 FAT32 partition of 256GB with 32K, MBR and aligned with Mib, but I also tried with 2 primary partitions (2 FAT32 and 1 FAT32 + 1 NTFS) : same result unfortunately. I tried this in case there is a partition size limit of 128GB hard coded somewhere.

I am maybe used some weird slots (like 247) which is usually unused. is there hard coded controls in source code to force using slots between 249 and 251 only for example ?

Please, don't ask me to install some weird tools like 'Pimp my Wii', I will NOT. I would like to really understand what is the reason and what I did wrong.

Regards,
Shawshank
Your main cios 249 is outdated, among other things. I could describe all the recommended changes you should make according to your syscheck, but honestly it would be easier if you install ModMii for windows, drag and drop your syscheck onto modmii.exe, and it will make recommendations for you. You can totally do this just to see what it is recommending and why, and choose to not proceed with actually implementing the recommended changes if this is what you decide.

If you continue to have issues, you can try formatting your hdd as wbfs instead of fat32, you'll lose many of the benefits of fat32, but it usually results in greater thumb drive compatibility

Edit: ideally you want d2x CIOS base 57 v10 beta 52 (or v8 final) installed to slot 249

Hi XFlak,

Thanks for you answer and suggestion, I did not know this drag and drop possibility with ModMii, I will have a look on this...

Concerning base 57, I already tried all d2x versions with it, and nothing is working each time (USB loader GX, Cfg Loader, Wiiflow, ...), even with an external USB HDD/SSD. Something is maybe wrong with my ciosmaps.xml installer file !
So, I overwrote my 252 slot before generating my syscheck report.

Note that I prefer d2x CIOS v10 beta 53 alt than beta 52 because I prefer to keep my 2 USB ports working and I don't use EMUNAND.

I have to mention that the slot is not very important as USB loader GX allow to set loader's IOS and game's IOS we want in its configuration panel. To be honest, everything is working well like this, except USB loader GX, so I prefer to change a minimum of things to not brake my others stuffs : even if it is my favorite loader, I will use another one if I don't find any solution.

My feeling is actually that my problem is due to a conjonction between an USB loader bug with my Samsung Fit hardware, as other softwares are unaffected.

Best regards,
Shawshank

I tried your suggestion and I have a question :
For point 50 (see screen capture), is it Hermes cIOS 5.1 mod by Rodries ? because if yes, it is what I already have in slot 224 (see previous syscheck report), so there is maybe a bug in ModMii.
ModMii224.png

Edit : Same thing for point 7, I already have it installed.

I think the version of 224 that modmii installs gets reported as v6 (instead of v5.1, even though they are the same). But you are right this could be improved to detect both v5.1 and v6 as being up to date.

That being said, you're running an old version of modmii, update to 6.6.2. By default hermes cios's are disabled (new option) so it's a moot point unless you enable it.

And some other things will change when you use the latest version of modmii

Edit: also, only modmii v6.6.2+ supports non-English syschecks. Use the latest version, and it will detect what you have installed already and your download list will be shorter. Also, when on that screen, you can enter g to just generate a guide, or y to download and build your guide

I tried, but the french installer is failing with Firewall error message (even with firewall disabled), So I used an older offline version.
Anyway, the english 6.6.2 installer seems different and working, so here is the result :
ModMii.png

I don't think any of these proposals will help me, but I saw something interesting in ModMii menus 4
I would like to create a cIOS installation WAD for d2x v10 beta 53 base 57 on slot 252.
Any hint on how to do that ? (it is probably possible through a command line)

You should update at least your cios' and priiloader. Honestly you should do everything, but if you want it to be more minimal then disable the options for extra brick protection and to update active ios's. I did notice you have a randomly patched ios16 (iirc) and all your stock ios's are slightly outdated so it could use an update to play original games from the disc channel properly, especially if you are going to be blocking updates using priiloader (assuming you also take that advice to install that and enable some system menu hacks)

You can build your custom wad from modmii's advanced downloads page, "A" from the main menu. Then type "beta" to select a different version of d2x ( this can be changed at any time from Modmii's main options menu). Then pick your starting cios, and tweak it how you want.

Oh and I wasnt suggesting you use the outdated French version of modmii. I was saying that the latest English version of modmii will be able to correctly analyze your French syscheck log, which is why IOS60 (and the hackmii installer & bootmii sd) is no longer in your list

And last thought, while on that modmii screen from your snapshot, enter "g" and read to answer a lot of other questions you might have about priiloader or ios's or lots of other relevant topics.

Edit: just to reiterate, you want to try a different cios with whatever apps you're using to hopefully find one that plays nicely with your hardware. The recommended cios's have many improvements over what you are using in your main cios slot(s)

Hi XFlak,

Sorry, my english level is not very high.
I understood what you meant with french version, no worries.

I tried some of your recommandations which have a chance to fix my USB loader GX issue without breaking other things. So now, I have
IOS250[56] d2x-v10beta53-alt (installed with ModMii generated WAD) and IOS252[57] d2x-v10beta52 (installed with dragbe's installer as ModMii don't allow to choose slot 252).

I checked all md5 from ModMii's d2x modules files and ciosmaps.xml to be sure that we are using the same source files : they are the same.

Before that, I also tried your recommendations d2x-v10beta52 with base 56 and 57 on slot 250 : no progress with USB loader GX.
FYI, I never saw any USB device working with d2x base 57 cIOS (no matter the version v6/v8/v10), maybe because I only touched RVL-001 Wiis and it exists maybe several USB controllers (like for DVD drives).

But now, I am observing that USB loader GX is aborting 'Initialize USB device' with using IOS250[56] d2x-v10beta53-alt (same result with my IOS251[58] d2x-v8final), which is interesting because I already tried this cIOS with another result into slot 252 !
So, it seems to confirm 1 of my previous suspicion : something is hardcoded into USB loader GX with slots 250 (and probably 251)

Shawshank

cIOS 249 (56) d2x-v10beta52 is the common/usual Setup for USB Game Loading.
cIOS 249 (57) d2x-v10beta52 is for a "handful" of Games that not work with Base 56

So,if this Setup is not working for you, your USB Device is maybe not "compatible" with the standard Settings.
You can maybe try to change the Loader´s IOS in the USBLoader GX Settings from 58 or 249 (or the opposing Way) please.

That should maybe help for the Intialization Issue from the USB Device.

EDIT: Maybe cIOS 249 (56) d2x-v8 final works better with your USB Device,it is worth a Try.:)

Good Luck.
Thank you.:)

Hi Alexender1970,

to summarize the story, everything was working well with my both USB hardwares (USB external SSD and USB3.1 Samsung flashdrive) with IOS250[56] d2x-v6, and one day, without changing anything, Samsung flashdrive stopped to work with USB loader GX only (it continue to work with Cfg loader and/or Wiiflow) : which is weird !

So, I see only 2 possible explanations : Something has changed inside the flashdrive (dead flashnand cell and/or controller reorganized data inside) and it is not well managed by USB loader GX or a bug into USB loader GX code.

but you and XFlak are right, first thing to try was to update all cIOS as possible.
I will try to have a look in the source code, but I am not a coder...

Modmii can change the slot for you if you use the advanced downloads menu as directed, but using the wii installer app is fine too

D2x v10 beta53 is generally not recommended, but you can try it.

D2x v8 final is 99.9% the same as d2x v10 beta 52

If the flash drive works with a different loader, are you just trying to get it to work with GX as well? How are your drives formatted?

Edit: by default loaders use whatever you have installed to 249. If you have other cios's installed to other slots they are not being used unless you configure an app via its settings to use a different slot

Edit2: you're using usb port 0 right? (the one nearest the edge of the console)

Hi XFlak,

I know all of this :
- I am using port 0 for loaders, but sometimes port 1 for other things, that is why I prefer to avoid beta52 because it is written on d2x home site that beta52 is only working with port0. but if v8 is 99.9% the same without this limitation, I will prefer v8 than beta53 now..
- I am using IOS selection into meta.xml for others loaders. And the configuration panel for USB loader GX, it is one of the reason why I prefer this loader (no need to go to my computer for each change)

For the format, interesting questions : I tested a lot of tools. I prefer guiformat.exe, but I also tried gparted, AOMEI, bootice and MS-DOS command line. is there a tool running on Wii that can test the compliance of partition/format and give a clear error message when it is not good and why ?
I saw an option 'Sync FS FAT' in USB loader GX, but it seems to do allmost nothing.

Of course I tried to run USB loader GX with exactly the same settings which are working with Cfg loader and Wiiflow (cIOS 251), but it is aborting 'Initialize USB device' and don't list any backup

v8 also doesn't support both usb ports, it's basically the same as d2x v10 beta 52

So it sounds like you're using FAT32, apologies you mentioned this earlier. You may have greater compatibility if you were to format it as WBFS using wiibackup manager. Not ideal, as you won't be able to use the drive to save homebrew or other things, but it may get it working using GX.

At the end of the day, if you have a setup that works with one usbloader, and it fails on another usb-loader, it's pretty safe to say your HDD & cIOSs are not the problem. While changes to the HDD format or cIOSs may resolve the issue, if the current setup is working with one loader, the primary issue lies with the loader that is not working (all else being equal).

Unfortunately I'm not sure what else to suggest to get this working... my advice... summarize your issue in 1 message as briefly as possible (it's getting difficult to track all the info you've provided in various posts), and make sure to highlight how the setup works with loader ABC but not GX, then see if @blackb0x is willing to investigate. But make his job as easy as possible by clearly describing the setup that works with wiiflow or cfg and does not work with GX; be sure to mention version numbers of your loaders and cIOSs too.

If this doesn't get resolved, I think you have 2 options. 1, use a different loader that works with your hardware, or 2, try different hardware. And ideally you want to be running the cIOSs recommended by ModMii (which are aligned with those also recommended by wii.guide). Sorry I couldn't be more help! Good luck!

Hello,

For @XFlak and @Shawshank

I say ==> can try this (see what thinks about this solution ==> XFlak):

given your syscheck report, it might be a good idea to import your syscheck report into Modmii, and it will tell you what to update (CIOS, IOS). Modmii will analyze your syscheck report and tell you what to update.

once, having used Modmii and updating your syscheck report, posting a NEW syscheck report.

these are only proposals:

It may be that your usb key is defective?

How do you run usb loader gx ?? , from the HBC or Forwader USB GX?

I also tried 1272 mod6 by blackb0x, but it is worst as I have a crash before 'Initializing USB device' step.
Do you quickly see the "Initializing usb devices" text before the crash?

My version boots with IOS58 and then reloads you to whatevers set in your config file, which by default is cIOS 249. This combination normally works well for most devices, but it seems like your drive might have compatibility issues with IOS58.

If you could get a good picture of the crash and uploaded it somewhere then it might help me to debug the issue a little.

I will try to have a look in the source code, but I am not a coder...

That's the problem with Flash Drives and why they are not recommended, they can work until they don't. Flash Drives eventually fail, even after working for years on a setup.

Easiest path would be not to use a Flash Drive if your other devices are working ok for you. If you MUST use a Flash Drive and this one worked for you, just buy a new one and I bet your issue will go away, well until that Flash Drive fails.

Hi Jeannotte,

I run from HBC.
I already did what you are suggesting with ModMii (see upper, XFlak proposed this), but it will solve nothing, it will just break some others softwares I am using.
The USB key is not defective (see upper too), as it is still working with others loaders (Cfg loader 70 r78 and WiiFlow Lite 5.4.9) and cIOS IOS251[58] d2x-v8final. it is also working perfectly with Windows, Linux, and even my Blu-Ray player.

@XFlak, I just tested a single WBFS partition by curiosity and no change : stuck again
I think I tried all existing cIOS versions during my tests now, but I just found a setting which is working with USB loader GX YEAHHHHHHH !
The magical configuration is a bit weird : it is IOS 58 for the loader and cIOS 251 for games (the same which worked with others loaders).

it still does not explain why it was working for weeks with IOS250[56] d2x-v6 but now, I have something I can reproduce, so I will follow your advice to write a summary to @blackb0x in case he will want to dig this... because it is still not normal to use IOS 58 for the loader instead of a cIOS (which is working for others loaders).

Because only base 58 is working now, I guess that there are several issues in fact :
1. an USB module in all d2x (and Hermes too) cIOS is a bit buggy with particular hardwares (maybe USB 3.1/3.0 with 2.2 backward compatibiliy) and it is probably inside the EHCI module, which is not patched with base 58 because Nintendo wrote it.
2. something changed internally inside my flashdrive and its controller reacted on a wrong way for USB loader GX
3. I suppose that GX is using an hardcoded cIOS slot somewhere during initialization for few step(s), no matter which one we want in "meta.xml". this is maybe why others loaders are working.

Hi blackb0x,

Thanks for your answer. Yes, I will do what you ask and post a photo of the crash...

No, "Initializing usb devices" does not appear before crash. I am not sure that I am now with same context as I did a lot of tests with XFlack, but here is my crash with IOS250 (IOS250[56] d2x-v10beta53-alt) in meta.xml :
blackb0x.png

Note that the crash happens even without any USB device connected ! Same crash with IOS248[38] d2x-v8final or IOS252[57] d2x-v10beta52 in meta.xml
Note, that I don't have crash with my magical settings IOS 58 for the loader and cIOS 251 (IOS251[58] d2x-v8final) for games.

Regards,
Shawshank

Thank you.:)

@XFlak

As I mentioned it in some Threads before, some USB (Flash) Drives works better with d2xfinal v8
There is maybe some Difference to d2xbeta52 and older or newer Devices.
....myself had this a few Times with Flash Drives.

But please,it is NO SOLUTION and no "Motivation" to still use Flash Drives !!:P:D

Thank you.:)

So, the 0.1% matter finally :rofl2:
Honestly, your observation can still be true about v8 and pendrives, but in my case, I think it is more due to base 58 than v8. I can try with IOS251[58] d2x-v10beta52 to check...
