Hacking updating to 4.0 offline

I'm currently on 3.2 with homebrew channel installed. I read through this topic http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=145914&st=15, but I'm still not too sure on the procedure.

I have ios60-64-v6174.wad, but when I drag it into freethebug, it doesn't patch anything. Do I really need to patch it?

To upgrade to 4.0 offline, do I just need to install the above wad or do I need to install some system menu or something? thanks

is the part in your guide with preloader when upgrading to 4.1 necessary? I've never used preloader before.

not necessary but provides brick protection.
