I mean, Nintendo's gonna find a way to block these carts if they could do it the original DS carts.

How exactly will we update?

Will the cart still be backwards compatible with DS lites? Similar to the R4i Gold working on a DS lite. (For this to happen, it won't be the same size as a 3DS cart. i.e, it will be missing that extra bump on the edge of one.

If it IS backward compatible, then we will likely update via DS lites or unupdated 3DS/DSi, much like we do now.

Any other ways I haven't thought of? Updating through DS lites and unupdated 3DS/DSi seems to be the only method right now.

Specialised updaters - plug cartridge into updater, provide power (via USB) cart updated

The update file can be on the updater, sent through USB, on the microSD (if applicable) etc.

This assuming that they can be blocked, and that they can be updated.

I think one DS cart used something similar - cannot remember what though.

M3i Zero used a specific wire to update its bootloader

Oh, yeah! I remember the M3i Zero now. BTW, almost all flashcarts require a Firmware upgrade (the inner hardware needs to be reflashed) at the moment, so you need to at least be able to boot the flashcart to use a MicroSD to update. But connecting it directly or indirectly (with a USB Cable) would work too, if there was a program written specifically to update the Crown3DS or any other flashcarts that might pop up.

The only reason DS carts can simply update and bypass is cause the DS mode is completely hacked and you can sign code and run it as if it's a real cart. We don't even know if this will happen at all for 3DS.
