Hello all. My apologies for probably reading the guides a bit less than I should have. I'm in what I find to be complicated situation. I hacked my 3DS systems last year back when Gateway was king, but now I see the new sysnand homebrew with A9LH and want to get on-board with that, but I find it all wildly overwhelming with how many more options there are now. Here's my overall situation:

    Hardware:

    O3DSXL (sysnand 7.2U, emunand Gateway 9.5U)
    N3DS (sysnand 8.1J, emunand Gateway 8.1J)
N3DSXL (sysnand 10.7U, freshly formatted with no homebrew)

I also have the following items:

    Gateway Red and Blue cards
    Sky3DS+ (two orange buttons)
    Ocarina of Time 3D (US)
    Ocarina of Time 3D (JP)
    ActionReplay PowerSaves

Both of the Zeldas have gateway exploit savegames on them as one of the save files.

I'm at the point where I at least want to update my equipment. My stuff is very outdated, and can't do a lot of things that I'd like to do. High on my priority list are the ability to access the eShop, the ability to play any legit retail DS or 3DS cart from any region, and the ability to play my R4i Gold or my Sky3DS+. I want to do this across any and all systems.

In addition, I'm interested in moving past my O3DS. I remember a year ago it was considered the 'safe spot' for homebrew, a fallback when the N3DS wasn't well figured out. My original 3DS data going back to my ambassador 3DS is on the emunand of my O3DS. I'm looking at two options:

    1. transfer my O3DS emunand data to my N3DSXL, or
    2. transfer my O3DS emunand data to my N3DS

I would prefer the second option, but worry that it might be difficult/impossible to do, and moreover I'm worried about losing the O3DS emunand data and about bricking the N3DS. I imagine it may be easier to do with the N3DS XL, least of all because it's an unhacked, freshly formatted system that is of the same region. My preference for the N3DS stems from my preference for that model (I like the regular over the XL and would like it to be my main unit).

Some final perks I'd like to see:

-using official and unofficial themes on shuffle across both systems
-converting the JP N3DS to a US firmware for multiplayer/download play/whatever (stuff that is region-locked for no good reason)
-playing online on all systems with legit games and pirated games
-ripping legit carts to system SD so I can relive the PSP glory days

Now I know that I've written a lot here, so I want to truly thank anyone who's gone this far. Below are my basic questions, the boiling down of what's above. If you can please help me to get any further with these questions, then your contributions will be greatly appreciated.

    1. Which of the different homebrew setups out nowadays are best to use? I've heard Luma3DS with A9LH is popular, will it do the things I'm looking for in a system?

    2. Is it at all possible to transfer my emunand of my O3DS to either of my N3DS systems? I don't care if it is no longer an emunand on arrival, in fact I'd prefer to just 'boot and go' like it was a normal system. I'd prefer it transfer to the JP N3DS somehow, but if that's not possible while still keeping what I'd like, then the N3DS XL will do.

    3. Is any of this stuff not necessary anymore? I don't have a problem selling old equipment if there's no need for it. I'm convinced that the Ocarina of Time games won't be worth much to me now that I have a Sky3DS+ for example. Gateway also seems to be going out of style, so I wouldn't have a problem letting it go.

Once again, thank you so much to anyone who took the time to read all of this. I thoroughly appreciate any and all responses. Thanks again, and hope you have a good day.

    1. a9lh with Luma 3ds cfw on sysnand(or rednand if you want to keep that) will do all the things you want it to. It's got twl and agbfirm patching built in, so gba games and ds games are no problem. Naturally you'll be able to play legit 3ds games and pirated games as well. Themes won't be an issue since you won't be using menuhax.

2.i honestly have no idea. I think I've seen threads about transferring emunands, but I've never done it. Sorry.

    3. Once you have a system with a9lh it has a permanent entry point. Basically you can sell your extra hardware, or keep it for future hacking. Totally up to you. I would keep the sky3ds though for the sake of convenience, and oot because it's a damn good game.

Edit: you can definitely dump your legit cartridges with a a9lh setup. Uncart has a a9lh payload, so you can run it before the system finishes booting. Not sure it matters for that particular program, but it's a fun fact.
Eshop and online are no problem since you can have a cfw running on the latest firmware(on your sysnand no less)

Thanks for the detailed response! Glad to see I can basically have my ideal "enhanced 3DS" with this stuff.

I brought up the transfer since I'd once done a system transfer from my original 3DS to the O3DS XL's emunand, which is how I got my data onto emunand in the first place. Of course that was on gateway and on something like 9.4 at the time. Now it'd be between old and new, with newer firmwares, etc. unless there's some trick to do system transfer at a lower firmware than current which works between 3DS models.

You could Simply Transfer your Data between 3DSes after installing A9LH

You should Read this thoroughly before doing anything else & make sure you follow each & every single step: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

Can't stress enough how important it is to follow every step exactly how it says to do it. The process is pretty involved(at least it was when I did it. Apparently things have gotten a little easier lately), and if you miss a step you'll most likely end up with a brick. One that you'll most likely need a hardmod to recover from. I'm not trying to scare you off though. Just follow the guide to the letter and you'll be fine. Just want you to know in advance that any problems are usually caused by user error. Just something to keep in mind.

Definitely going to follow the guide as closely as possible, I can't afford to mess stuff up!

I guess my big question is will a system transfer work from a US O3DS gateway emunand to a JP N3DS Luma/A9LH sysnand? Of particular concern to me about that is that Gateway only seems to support up to 10.7 at the moment, but as far as I'm aware you have to be on current firmware to do a system transfer.

No, you can't transfer between different regions. You can perform a region change (details in Plailect's guide) but the eShop will not work on a region-changed N3DS which will probably affect the system transfer. Gateway works on 11.0 emuNAND, there's no update on their site because 11.0 did not break their Select menu and so they didn't need to release an update.

Okay, so there's no reason I couldn't install luma+a9lh on a US N3DS and system transfer from my O3DS emunand to the uS N3DS with luma+a9lh sysnand?

I've done a motherboard swap on two JP N3DS before, and there shouldn't be any hardware differences between a US and JP N3DS beyond the mobo, so I figure I could do the same thing here. Valid concept?

There is nothing to prevent you from transfering from the US o3ds to the US n3ds after getting Luma installed correctly by either Menuhax or A9LH.

I can't vouch for anything involving the JP 3ds though.

Is there any reason you specifically want to transfer to the JP 3DS?

Mostly that I own one already, and also that I want to have a black N3DS as I'm not a fan of the white model. I know it sounds silly, but it is what it is.

I prefer the N3DS model to the XLs for a multitude of reasons. I prefer the black unit most of all for how much better most cover plates mesh with it.

Like I said though, I've done motherboard swaps before, so if I can swap in a US N3DS mobo (which I don't see why I couldn't) then I'll just do that, then hack the unit, system transfer my old data to it from my O3DSXL emunand, and finally end up with an N3DS that has all my old system data, plus homebrew and eshop access.

Silly or not those are Your reasons and if they hold enough value, so be it.

I'm gonna shoot in the dark here since I'm not experienced with it, but wouldn't region changing the JP 3ds into US allow someone to do a sys-transfer between different regions and then be able to switch back to the Original Region theoretically?

Anyone with more knowledge feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: Nvm I just re-read the kitty's post. I was wrong.
