Hacking Updating from 11.8 to 11.9 - is it okay to update from the 3ds normally?

I'm confused about how homebrew and everything works. I installed it on my 3ds to make custom home themes but that's pretty much the extent to it (thank you Anemone3ds)...

I was wondering if it was okay to update normally to use 11.9 seeing as I'm on 11.8? I want to use the web browser for stuff here and there but it requires that update. I believe I'm using something called "Steelhax"? All the posts I've seen are from people using Luma so I don't think that's anything I can follow (unless Steelhax is another form of it?? again I'm clueless with this stuff lmfao). If not, what should I do to update safely without messing anything up?

Yes it's perfectly safe to update.

It has been a while I updated my o3ds as well. Do you update luma3ds first before updating via system settings? There used to be a thread which tells you what updates are "safe" and what not, but it changed with b9s, people probably think Nintendo cant overwrite kernel access hax but Im always way too worry to update.

Yes if you don't have the latest version of Luma then you need to update that first before updating the system.

Steelhax is the name of an entrypoint that only allows you to use homebrew on the 3DS. Luma is a CFW (custom firmware) available for use on a hacked 3DS system. If you only have Steelhax (and use it on a daily basis), then you probably don't have Luma installed on your 3DS. Does you 3DS do anything if you press/hold the select button while it's turning on?

Assuming that your system doesn't have CFW and you wish to go forward with it, here's the official hacking guide to get you started.

As for whether it's safe to update your system normally, yes it is.
If you happen to have Luma CFW installed, it's recommended to update it to the latest version currently available (9.1) before you update your system.
If you still don't have Luma CFW and already happened to update your system to 11.9, don't worry about it. The guide I linked above has you covered.

You can't lose CFW doing a system update because the portion of the NAND containing it is write protected when it's installed. The worst that can happen is the new version is not compatible with Luma and it won't boot (like what happened with Luma 9.0 on 11.8), but all you need to do to fix it is manually update Luma (that is, just replace the boot.firm on the SD card)
