Now that it was just inveiled...

Probably nobody would agree with me, but I just find entire Switch 2 situation a bit disappointing.

I know people called it Switch 2 out of simplicity that the community used to refer to Nintendo console of uncertain name, and never actually expected Nintendo to call it like that, but to have Nintendo actually call it Switch 2, they took a name of their previous console and put a chronological number at the end of it... it's cursed to me. Has anyone seen NES 2 or GameCube 2? Also development codenames. Ultra64, Dolphin, NX... Switch 2? Really?

But, from what it seems, the name actually seems accurate. So far it doesn't seem to be anything more than Switch with better hardware and ergonomics. I always got the impression that Nintendo likes experimenting with new gimmicks, which is either hit (wii, switch), or miss (Wii U), and that separates them from the rest of the main consoles. So far it doesn't seem Switch 2 will have any. I totally understand that people may not want gimmicks and just want plug and play functionality. But it looks like Nintendo really struck gold with Switch, and don't feel a need to do anything more.

on a lighter note, it was announced on my birthday :grog:

There's a decent chance that the new gimmick is meant to be the mouse mode for the joy-cons so you can more easily play games like Mario Maker or even Mario Paint (if it comes on NSO).

I agree with the sentiment about the "Switch 2" name being official though, it feels like they put exactly 5 seconds of thought into that name.

The 3DS looked fun and exciting, you would literally open a new world. The Switch, could've been better, but still, it looked really neat in it's own way. The Switch 2? Reminds me of my bland-as-hell peers. Looks like they let the 6th grader design something "cool". Looks like the console is just waiting to mug me!

This had been discussed in a few other topics, and I think the issue was that "Switch" was definitely going to be part of the name. With that in mind, Nintendo needed to prevent another Wii U by choosing a name that didn't sound like an add-on. Some names, like "Switch Attach," would have definitely caused that problem.

Switch 2 was the safe bet, and Sony's been successful with that naming convention for decades. The whole point of the Switch 2 is to continue the momentum of the original, so it's a more than reasonable choice. To be honest, we may be looking at a long-term plan to continue iterating on the same console/handheld hybrid design.

The Switch 2 is safe and that's exactly what it should be. 100%, they've made the right move.
Agreed. Lots of people like the form factor, and the copycat consoles show that the handheld aspect is still in demand. I much prefer what they've revealed to redesign just for the sake of it.

See I agree that the name is odd, but the issue is I wouldn't be shocked if Nintendo named it "Switch 2" simply to be as safe as possible after months of... not confirming it, and then multiple leaks calling it the Switch 2. Also Playstation has been doing this for years and gotten away with it. I feel it's a bit safer than that, but the 3DS was practically just a DS/DSi with a 3D screen and better hardware and it's still probably my favorite console still (also the name was just "DS" with a 3 smacked on it). I'm more... cautiously optimistic with this console than I am immediately dismissive.

Maybe they could have made the 3DSwitch. Missed opportunity? :P

You'd all be complaining no matter what it was called or if it had a gimmick
Exactly lol
If it had a gimmick - "why focus on gimmicks that will only be used a few times instead of better hardware?!1"
If it was called anything else than Switch 2 - "did Nintendo not learn anything from the Wii U? Market it as a CONSOLE and not an ACCESSORY!!!1"

I really like this approach, and having a 8 year gap between them is really nice. Feels like the system got a good long lifetime and really matured on the software front.

Plus, I don't think we got this many Zelda titles on a single system, ever. 3DS had a lot as well.

What are you expecting to happen? They took what worked, made is more powerful, bigger and hopefully better joy cons. What more do you want?

The Switch 2 is a safe name. Nintendo is still reeling from the WiiU. The names all seemed to signify something relevant to the console and gimmicks if it had any. Nintendo 64 - 64 bit gaming, Wii - the 'i' is a wiimote for motion control, etc. The Switch 2 is just the 2nd generation Switch. Really not sure what people expected since we knew they were going to release an upgraded switch.
