Any Wii can be softmodded at this point. But getting an old or used one would be idea since you'd have a chance of getting one that can have BootMii/boot2 installed.
I think, although someone may correct me. That as it stands all Wiis (at least all PAL and US NTSC) can be hacked at present (with a variety of methods).

Same here i purchased two wiis off of ebay, really cheap cause i bought two that had a broken dvd drive, and both wiis could install bootmii has boot2 and the bonus was, one of the wiis just had coke split on it so i had to clean the laser, after that it worked great the other wii i had to replace the dvd drive. but in the end i had two older version perfectly working wiis

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better. -

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
