There's no reason to not update from 10.1. You're past 9.2, just update to current.

• hold L + R + Up + A and turn it on
• if you get a "System Update" screen, press cancel and it will turn off

that might delete downloaded update files. note that the system checks every 24 hours. make sure that DNS settings are properly set up.

There's no reason to not update from 10.1. You're past 9.2, just update to current.

parental controls doesn't block anyone from installing updates since 4.1 I think.

nothing. updates don't install themselves. doing the recovery mode trick should delete the update files for a day.

Can confirm this is correct, at least on 9.2. Updating from System Settings will not ask for the PIN, but from the main menu prompt it will.
I originally set it to 0000 so I could use Game Chat on Pokemon, and it's saved me numerous times.

install themehax from it. therefore you dont need tubehax and you can get into homebrew right on the startup.

edit: oops, my fault. if you still have access to homebrew, use it. if you dont, you're better off buying cubic ninja or ocarina of time from ebay (pretty sure its been patched on newer carts.)
