Only if I use a widescreen patch via the usrcheat.dat it doesn't look stretched.

Yes, the patch is included, and is separate from "usrcheat.dat".

@Robz8 I think I found the reason:
TwilightMenu checks on the existence of Widescreen.cxi, copies it to luma/sysmodules as TwlBg.cxi and enables the widescreen cheat.
After closing the game, the Widescreen.cxi isn't there anymore so it doesn't enable the cheat.

@Robz8 I think I found the reason:
TwilightMenu checks on the existence of Widescreen.cxi, copies it to luma/sysmodules as TwlBg.cxi and enables the widescreen cheat.
After closing the game, the Widescreen.cxi isn't there anymore so it doesn't enable the cheat.

Install both latest TWLMenu++ CIAs to fix the bug.

You don't need that. You can get TwlBg.cxi using the instructions from here.

I plopped my widescreen CXI file in /luma/sysmodules and it works flawlessly

Even though the AMCE widescreen patch works for AMCP, the CRC16 has to be changed to 73A0 to make it work for everyone who's interested to play Mario Kart DS in widescreen.
