Hello!
I'm having some issues playing backup PS1 games and was hoping the forum could give me some guidance.
For reference I have a 79001 slim PS2, which reads official and backup PS2 games no problem. I'm using Imgburn with an Asus SDRW-08D2S-U optical drive, and burning onto 700 MB Memeorx CD-Rs. Here is a screenshot of my Imgburn settings

The backups I've made have been inconsistent for the most part. I got a backup of silent hill to run consistently, and after a few tries of popping the disc out and then back in Ape Escape and Castlevania will load up and play just fine. But half the time I get a clicking sound and "disc not read"

So my question is: What is going wrong here?
Is the CD-R Laser in my PS2 shitty? Is Memorex just an inconstant brand? Should I be using different software, or different write speeds when creating backups? Do I need a different optical drive to burn PS1 games? For those of you who use mechapwn to play backup PS1 games, how do you burn your games?
(I made a similar thread on PS-X place yesterday but they locked it because I wasn't clear enough that I am only backing up GAMES WHICH I LEGALLY OWN OF COURSE ;)

Do not use a slimline disc burner, that is most likely where all of your issues are coming from.

I've used Memorex exclusively in the past (although only for DVD-R) and they are generally okay. Most if not all of them are manufactured by CMC Magnetics, which is also generally okay.

Burn at 8x or 16x speed, if you really feel like experimenting and potentially wasting discs, you can even try 4x, but I don't recommend it.

If all else fails, you'll need to adjust the "CD pot" on the laser module. (I would suggest using PMAP, but it does not support the 7K and 9K models.)

If you have FreeMcBoot, I also suggest using "PSXLAUNCHER" and swapping the disc, to see if that changes anything.

Thank you for the information! Are there any usb optical drives that work well for PS1 games should I be using an internal bay drive. I actually happen to have a 2014 Dell Optiplex I rescued from a dumpster earlier this year, it has a DH-16AES optical drive. Do you think this would do the trick or is it still too modern? I'm burning some discs with it now, will report back.

I'm not aware of any external disc writers that work well exclusively for PS1 games, but in general, pretty much any 5.25" DVD (CD) burner will work.

You were right on the money! All the discs I've burned with the optiplex have worked great first try!
For posterity if anyone else finds this thread having the same issue I was, try to get your hands on an older internal optical drive.
Edit: I found a really good resource on making high quality burns, can't post the link cause I'm new but just google "The Ultimate Guide To PSX CD-Rs" and you should be able to find it.
