Personally, I don't watch this tv series, but I've saw this at news
Apparently, Travelers serie showed a news broadcast about a nuclear explosion in London
However, the images used were actually from the Lac-Mégantic tragedy of 2013, where a train carrying oil exploded in the middle of the town
This tragedy completly destroyed the middle-town and killed 47 person (some says 52 disappearence, due to the body/skeleton who totally burned)

So TV show that ponders what if scenario uses real life equivalents and analogues? Is that not how it is normally done? Why are we discussing it here?

A lot of apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic movies use news footage of actual disasters and accidents. At some point such footage can be licensed for other works. If it's only going to be used in the background, it's cheaper to just buy stock footage of accidents, crashes, riots etc. and edit it.
