"New World Transparent Specimens" is an art project by the aquaculture engineer - fisherman - artist - biological specimens manufacturer, Iori Tomita. Basically it's preserved biological specimens (critters), only the flesh has been rendered transparent, the bones dyed magenta and the cartilage dyed blue, to display the skeletons in amazing detail, using the dark arts of voodoo this method, perfected to, um, perfection.

Each critter takes five months to a year to prepare, depending on size.

The trick is to judge the timing of each step of the process perfectly, long enough for the enzymes to turn the flesh perfectly clear, but not long enough for the specimen to start dissolving.

The specimens are suspended in glycerin, and can serve as a learning aid, an art piece, or if you illuminate them just the right way, an awesome creepy night light.

Smaller specimens are available for purchase at several stores around Japan, and cost 2,000 - 20,000 yen. Larger, more expensive specimens are only sold at exhibitions.

The smaller ones are really small. But they're still neat.

That is creepy and awesome at the same time. I'm not sure I would want one of those around the house.

Would totally drop $20 dollars to get a decent sized one. I would make a nice place on my shelf for it along with all the other odd stuff I've accrued via dubious methods.

I hope these "specimens" died of natural causes.

They look so cool. I'd love to get something huge like a rhino. It'd scare the shit out of any guest.

I think humans would look cool, but it would be kind of weird having a dead, transparent body standing in your living room.
