Source - -snipped- (Not the best place to refer to)

Key Points

- Three founders of *TPB* have lost an appeal against a conviction for illegally sharing copyrighted content.
- The ruling reduces the sentences the men face but increases fines to 46m crowns (£4.1m)
- The appeal court ruling will see Mr Neij serve a 10 month sentence; Mr Sunde eight months and Mr Lundstrom four months. Once Mr Svartholm Warg is fit his "criminal liability" will be tested by the appeals court
- "It is now time for TPB, whose operators have twice been convicted in court, to close. We now look to governments and ISPs to take note of this judgment, do the responsible thing and take the necessary steps to get TPB shut down"

Bad News for TPB though there are many other torrent sites

Holy shit. I mean that was way too high of a fine. This courtcase wasn't fair in any way whatsoever. These guys were gonna get the guilty verdict from the get go and they're beeing made an example of to other torrentsites, people that download and upload and any that agree on that filesharing is okey. This is outragous, and whatever your opinions is on filesharing, thinking it's right or wrong, you have to agree that the punishment for this was insane.

Just to put it into perspective, many people in sweden get pissed of when convicted rapists for instance only get like 6 months to 2 years (oh yes it's true) jailsentence and doesn't pay much of a fine at all. And some dudes that do filesharing get this much. I can give many more examples on how lean sweden generally is when it comes to sentences but don't have the time or energy for it, want to know more detailed then look it up. However it doesn't take a genious to realise this was completely outragous and that these guys were burned at the stake. (or however the saying goes xD)

It's probably for the better that the penguin bar be shut down anyway, torrents as a method of downloading (regardless of legality) is steadily declining in the favour of things like megaupload or usenet.

One of the attorneys for the record companies said this about the ruling.

In two years, this type of piracy will be over. After a ruling like this and all the pioneers start to get older and have children and families, piracy won't occur to this extent.
Epic fail.

No, he's actually right.
THIS TYPE of piracy, referring to torrents, will probably be finished or depreciated just like kazaa, napster and limewire.

No shit, you stop one kind of piracy and another kind will take its place.

the fact that it has closed is a warning tht anyone famous org which has any connection with piracy is going down
i think 4chan are the only group tht are fearless bcz they have no base... a rom site (famous) no longer keeps roms bcz of this very reason
they shouldnt be forceful in keeping the site up... how will they pay 4.1mil

PS - IMO the site name shouldnt be hidden cuz BBC themselves are mentioning it but surely better to be safe... we dont want gbatemp closing down for silly reasons

Ah, oh well. I've never liked TPB at all. And it pisses me off that if anyone I know IRL is familiar with torrents, TPB is the only site they know of. Pity about the fine to the founders, though.
