Some things seriously bug me on games. I know this list is true to a lot of others.

#3: Spending time in order to waste it.

The DS/GC Zelda games are up to bat. RPGs too. What I absolutely hate is when you have to waste your time for bad reasons. In the windwaker franchise, the boat is extremely annoying. You have to monitor the boat in case anything happens. There should have been some sort of way for them to incorporate rewards for not just skipping from point a to point b, but still allow it to exist. In addition to that, I kind of wish there was some sort of computerized option in RPGs (Not auto-battle, i would want them to heal or do magic or something) to just have them level up for you. Oh yay, I get to fight you for the damn 27th time, even though its still the same exact process as it was before. You as well, Pokermuns. You as well.

#2: Winning=Losing

This is by far the thing that turns me off the most. I just HATE IT when I completely kick the ass of my opponent, without any HP missing. Then the cutscene comes and several variations of the same theme come on, the theme that would say "you got wiped by your opponent." If I beat the hell out of my opponent, shouldn't he be slightly weak or atleast leave. Instead im on the ground unconscious while I'm mocked by him. Why wouldn't you let me lose the Boss battle on purpose then, [insert game name here]. WHY! :`(

#1: Useless Characters

Characters that are on your team for important uses that are stupid. I'm not going to count cpu controlled teammates because they always mess up. I'm talking about the ones you can control but you just can't fix it. Damnit, Edward for FFiv. I used all of my damn phoenix downs on you. For whatever reason, your like a goddamn magnet to the other team. You happen to be in the backrow, and yet your attacked. This is a great addition to the fact that you die in >2 hits. I wouldn't be surprised if 0 is a possible answer. Even something negative. Maybe the enemies dislike you too, Edward. Maybe its because all I can actually do with you is play LIFE'S ANTHEM! You play your damn banjo, and you burn in hell too >:(

My biggest turnoffs are

stat progression in action games (Spartan: Total Warrior, GunValkyrie, Killer 7, Otogi)
ability to grind in strategy games (the arenas in Fire Emblem, FFTA)
low difficulty (FFTA)
boring puzzles (most Zelda games)
annoying presentation (Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the music in the first level of Time Crisis II)

Mine would be:
- playing all day to get some loot that you need and it takes forever for it to drop. Then once you get it and dont really need it, enemies drop it like crazy. Damn Rubies in Monster Hunter.

- Looking for enemies in game that has random spawn. When you need to train it takes a while for enemies to appear, but when you're about to die and wants to leave the dungeon, they appear every 3 steps.

- and thats pretty much it for now.

Saves. I hate games where you have a designated save point. Why can't i just start and stop when ever I want. It gets especially annoying if i have to go or something, but there isn't a save point anywhere near me. It means I'll either have to replay a part, or keep going and risk being late to soemthing. One of the big reasons i can never get through some rpgs (final fantasy) is because i get to a certain portion and die, but because my previous save was like 10 minutes ago, i get really turned off and i don't feel like playing again. It seems that they've corrected this with quick saves, but I don't understand why. Why have a quick save as apposed to a normal save.

I hate games that still have extra lives. RPG's dont really fit into that category, and most are little kid games that I don't play, but we're living in the future, we have highly advanced game consoles with built in save memory so why do I have to collect 100 whatevers to keep playing when if I did run out of lives and get a game over I would load my save like nothing happened?

Something that most RPG's are guilty of though is kicking you back to the main menu and having to manually reload your last save. I died, big whoop, if I didn't get pissed off and turn of the system I obviously want to keep playing so why do you just reload it for me?

What I hate about sequels is that you have to start from scratch, even if you're using a character that just saved the world and defeated the big, bad boss at the end in the previous game. This is notably tedious in games like Metroid or Zelda. How many times has Samus gotten her Varia suit?

This is a real shit bomb, I waste all of my Items on an Unbeatable or a useless boss that you'll end up losing to him in the next scene anyway.

EDIT: This is not a big thing but I think it's kinda annoying..
When the main character (RPG's mostly) doesn't talk. It goes like this:
Protagonist: .......
Other Character: What happened, Protagonist?
Protagonist: ......
Other Character: Really? We have to hurry!
and I'm like WTF did you just say? I WANNA KNOW DAMMIT

I got a few, not sure which people will agree with on this though. I wonder if my first will but it's really due to lack of time/shorter attention span with long games.

1) RPGs that go over 20 hours or so. I can't stand this ever as I will never finish the game. I maybe on a bit of a budget, but I also am married, have a job, and own more than one system so finding 30-100hours for an RPG is out of line, also when a game gets over around 30-40 I forget way earlier stuff that makes me get into the 'why am I even bothering anymore' state of mind so I stop. (Final Fantasy's higher than 6 and Dragon Quests that tease that 80-100hr barrier.)

2) Multiple endings -- Just finish the damn game already, don't make me worry that if I have X dude Y chick won't join. Don't make me worry that if I don't do some trivial crap 18hours into the game, I'll get the shit ending and get ripped off out of all my time spent...just don't do it. Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean come to mind on this one.

3) Aggravating so-called optional side quests -- Why? I mean really, why call them optional only to find out if you don't do it some part later in the game will be obscenely annoyingly hard or some other bad trigger. Just make it part of the standard quest and be done with it, or just remove it.

4) Auto-checkpoints all over a stage. -- Why am I not allowed to just save and come back when I want to? If I'm in a hurry and in a crappy spot, why should I be punished having to replay 15min of hell because some douchy programmer stuck the checkpoint another 5min later?

5) Archaic save methods that cause some loss of effort -- Legend of Zelda I'm glaring at you damnit. Miyamoto wake up, it's not the NES nor 1987. Take Twilight Princess for example. When you die on this or just save and come back later you aren't where you were in many cases, but at some dungeon/cave door, town, or far off checkpoint. Furthermore, even though you 'saved and quit' why is it I have to re-walk this crap, and why the hell have a lost like 100rupees, 20 arrows, and 10bombs I had picked up along the way, oh and whatever cool item was in that dungeon just because I didn't backtrack, exit cave, saved, and reentered so it would form a new breakpoint? This is why I have not finished nor play more than 20% of that game!

6) Backtracking != added quality gameplay experience -- Again glaring at Zelda here, this time Phantom Hourglass. Simply put, every time you clear a dungeon, clear some cave for a plot progression of sub item you need to return slowly across the sea in your boat to that one Temple. And then again once inside you have to re-work the previous floors, and then do an added one (up to a point I know eventually you get those blue swirly teleports every few levels.) That was NOT cool, just as it was asinine to make Donkey Kong 64 a 100hour game by taking a 25hour game and making you re-backtrack the same crap with a few more kongs to do the same basic crap for the most part getting their specific coins. ARGH on both!

I have to agree on this one.
Originally I thought that random battles were ruining a perfect game for me ( I'm thinking of Skyes of Arcadia and all those random battles every 30 seconds or so...), especially because every time they keep on loading the same animation before you start the battle that coupled with the same animation sequence when you finish it makes it longer then the battle itself......
But thinking it trough, I have to admit that as an adult working male I have very little time to send on my games, and the only thought of playing something for 40 hours really turns me off.
I can't believe it took me about 70 to finish Zelda TP, but the game was really worth it any minute.

save points. these don't make the game any more enjoyable or challenging as game designers seem to think, having to replay half an hours gameplay five times because you made one screw up is extremely boring

any rpg where you "go to school" (custom robo arena is the biggest offender there). aaaaaargh, I am not one of those people that cares if the protagonist is supposed to be like 12 (ie, pokemon) but going to school is just stupid an annoying

grinding! I play a game to have FUN, not to WORK!

loosing = winning
usually where you have a super powerful boss, you waste all your potions and other valuable health restoring items, and then realise you were supposed to loose for the storyline to progress!!!

I agree with most of the people here.. I don't agree, however, with the "hate RPGs longer than 40 hours"... but that's my opinion, I think it's nice being able to buy a videogame that you know will last for a lot of time (especially in this economical crisis period). However I'd rather have replayability than just a long and boring game... New game+ is something I love and multiple endings too..

However what I don't like is:

- Characters that act in a stupid way, like.. non-realistic.. (all those cool-guy characters running with a sword in their hand against a super-hyper-giant space robot and winning at the end). I'd rather have character that resemble real people and act that way.

-Slow loading times

-Slow and unnecessary scenes.. like in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or Final Fantasy VII where the scene goes like this:
Character 1 trips over the sidewalk.
Character 2: "Character 1! Are you ok?"
Character 1: "..."
then 30 seconds pass before the character tries to get up
Character 1: "whew, I'm fine now"
other 20 seconds pass when character 2 is laughing
Character 2: "haha!" (wtf, I've already seen the image of you laughing, why do I need text too?)
other 30 seconds pass
Character 1: "ok, let's go"

That really pisses me off

Well, this is less of a turn off and more just something that pisses me off; getting captured by guards during cutscenes that you kill hundreds of during gameplay. Ratchet and Clank Going Commando, for example. You kill millions of robots on every stage. But then at the end, where you meet the big bad (who isn't that big or bad), he says "SEIZE THEM" and you're suddenly too weak to pull a trigger.

Wow no more things people hate about games?

How about lame yearly sport titles that charge you full price for a new roster and minor updates(most years.) Total rip.

These aren't my top turnoffs, just the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

1) Escort Missions- Kind of speaks for itself

2) Teammates that drag you down- Like in GTA IV how during a very long mission like the bank robbery, your teammate could die from one headshot without it being at all your fault and you have to start over again. Or in games like Secret of Mana where your teammates start walking into walls and it won't let you go anywhere until everyone moves.

3) Save points- I hate having to go back really far after playing for an hour.

Thats one of the stupidest things I've heard since I stopped going on the gametrailers forums. You do know thats the point of an RPG? Its to level up, increase stats, getter better items, etc. If you don't like that I don't think RPGs are for you. But I do agree with the Windwaker thing you said.

And I have to say I disagree with a lot of things people said, like stat building in action games. They would be very dull if you couldn't get upgrades. And in which action game don't you have stat building? God of War, Devil May Cry, etc.

RPGs that take over 20 hours to beat? I hope your joking about that one. If I game is good, your going to want to see as much of it as you can. Otherwise your not playing the game because its fun, instead your playing it to be able to brag or tell people that you beat it.

Multiple endings make a game more fun, because you get to see how things would have turned out in a different way, so you get that feeling that you actually had some effect on the game.

Side quests always have some sort of reward or just legnthen the game for you. If its a side quest that means its some you can do ON THE SIDE and is not neccasary. So if you don't like them, don't do them.

Joking about a long winded RPG, nope. I have games I want to play and limited hours to do so. As I see it, this alone is a good reason to avoid an RPG if it's over 20-30hours because it will deprive me of another quality game I'll have to skip for a while (maybe years if ever) because I'm stuck in some slow moving dragged on story because I have only so few limited hours I can do stuff around life. But I suppose it shouldn't be RPGs taking the blame on it but any game in general. No I'm not a huge fan of a 3hour game either, but when they just take forever I either lose interest, give up caring, or have another game I want to work on too and it gets forgotten. I'm not alone on this as I've seen others here and many others at other sites who hate dragged out titles. Distance doesn't always equal fun. It's about the ride, not how long the ride takes. I'm also not sure where you come up with the 'brag I finished it' crap either as I don't do that, hate people who do Do that. I see that as showoff stupidity much like stupid trophies/achievements on those 2 consoles just a e-penis competition pissing contest.
