I wonder: Is the horror only transmitted via the text? Because I skipped the messages and completed the first few missions and except the case that the theatre's upstairs looked a bit broken, nothing seemed scary to me.

For games like Kim Possible 3, Teen Titans, etc, and apparantly this one, make sure you're using the latest beta or a build based off of the latest CVS.
