Y'know, you can always use an XP customizer and cut out the functionality you will not require anyways. Alternatively there's a plethora of Linux distros for the less capable PC's.

If you're tired of your horse being slower than a car, the solution does not involve doing anything to the horse.

What about a horse with a jetpack?
A jetpack doesn't make the horse any more fit then it normally is - on its own four feet the horse is still slow. I'd understand steroids, but the jetpack isn't helping. It's the jetpack that's fast, not the horse.

As far as I know, there was no official Linux release of Counter Strike, thus you'd have to play over Wine and you don't have the hardware for that.

Opt for Windows 98 or a barebones version of XP.

Linux Mint Debian version.
Take's like 100 mb ram or less

And running Counter strike trough wine wont require better hardware.

I have a shity laptop with only dual core 1.8GHz and 2 gig rams.

World of warcraft and counter strike works just as good on linux now.

World of warcraft runned better than on windows (Though i don't play wow anymore since about half a year back)

Okay, let's follow your line of logic. The OS will take up 100 megs of RAM out of the 92 available, Wine will also waste some resources. Effectively he will end up with about 40 megs of RAM, if not less, to play the game. Correct me if I'm mistaken but *that doesn't seem like a whole lot* and definatelly won't be enough to keep the system stable.

you could try ubuntu or linux mint and install the xfce interface, giving you lubuntu basically, its not ram hungry at all and runs rather smoothly on old laptop, i got a 128mb ram 800mhz pc sitting in my living room that runs it smoothly. I use it as a media server which it manages to do pretty well, streaming stuff to my ps3 or laptop perfectly

Ok i have a old, damn old laptop with 192 mb ram, pentium III, 10gb of disk, with win XP.
So i'm looking a for a less consuming ram os, i've tryed the latest Ubuntu but it made my computer slower than with XP, any suggestions?
Now I'll admit I don't know anything about Linux, but installing a 2012 OS on a machine built circa 2001 is probably where you went wrong there :D

The alternative would be either an older version of Linux or sticking with XP and doing a RAM upgrade, but there's a question over whether it's worth it now.

Also keep an eye on any virus scanners you've got on there, "resident shield" processes that run in the background automatically scanning things absolutely slay older computers and gave me no end of grief on my laptop, modern ones just aren't designed for systems where memory usage is an issue.

Your right you don't know anything about linux, Ive happily had a "2012 OS" work perfectly well on machines over 10 years old.its all a matter of what desktop enviroment you choose and how you have it setup, animations etc

Linux is alot more streamlined than windows is and it can handle the architecture alot better, windows with all its crapware and pointless default options, such as indexing the whole pc. Is a complete waste of Ram and processor power.

SliTaz or Crunchbang work great on shit hardware.
Crunchbang looks nicer, Slitaz is only 30 mb.
Slitaz is probably faster, but it's wifi support is the reason I'm using crunchbang.

For older hardware Salix with LXDE/XFCE is your best bet, as it's designed to run on hardware even older than yours while still maintaining a modern interface and applications. It's based on Slackware, the latest version of which still claims to run on an 80486, and while I doubt it can actually go back that far and still be usable it will most certainly run quickly on any Pentium III out there. As for Counter Strike, I doubt very much Source will run well under WINE based on my experience with slightly more recent hardware, but 1.6 should be very playable. You didn't say which one you ware talking about.

Buy a new laptop, or get a desktop.

Or find other linux distros that would operate comfortably in a netbook.
