I seem to remember that someone eventually did pinpoint the cause of the OTPless bricks, but I can't find the relevant post. (It was some sort of unexpected memory corruption on reboot.)

the reason it was causing bricks was discovered
boot9 does a variable length XDMA copy over that area. The length is based on something that changes PER BOOT
so, it was random chance if you bricked or not.

    If your throat closes, putting oxygen in your mouth will not solve anything - as you will be introducing oxygen prior to the area of obstruction
