Where I live is a little bit of a rough area, it's no Manchester or nothing, but it's rough enough. I heard something tonight that tops anything that's ever happened around here before though! It's a little hard to believe but it's the honest truth.

Lot's of people this afternoon here were having problems getting a mobile phone signal. It wasn't a bad signal, it just wasn't there. Literally all mobile phones on a particular netwrk were dead. We just found out why. Someone has actually stolen, that's right STOLEN, the local mobile phone mast! Don't ask me how as I haven't asked around, but it's pretty insane!

It's not like it would actually do anyone any good or anything! Criminals are just getting dumber and dumber with every generation! [IMG]

They'll probably sell it for scrap. Happens a lot in Wales these days (Although, not always mobile phone masts).

lmao I've heard of people robbing church roofs and stuff for the scrap value, that's pretty nornal - but a phone mast! The bastard things are huge! The amount of cash you get for scrap is a pittance compared to how much effort is gonna be needed to break that down. Knowing the intelligence level of the local crim these days they'll probably phone up the mobile company and ransom it! [IMG]

And even if the phone company agree to pay the ransom, chances are it'll be about the cost of a few pints and a packet of crisps or two.

For the amount of effort put in to get it it's nothing really. There's more money in untaxed diesel and smokes.

lol, damn philistines will nick anything these days...

I mean, i can understand stealing lead from church roofs, simply because lead is very expensive these days.... but a bunch of scrap iron.... jeese.

I am not adverse to a bit of underhandedness for scrap metal dealings (mainly complex alloy/copper/aluminium here) but this ups the ante. Were it to be mine I could make a hell of a phone jammer though...... ideas.

re: stripping a church roof, if they are an older church they are usually done with lead which is pretty dense and scrap dealers quite like it (although the Eu more or less banning lead had an impact).

I could ask around for you! Might be a bit haard to ship though. [IMG] I'm not adverse to the odd bit of shadiness but damnit, if you're gonna commit a crime at least make sure the resulting cash flow is worth the effort. They're gonna spend days breaking that down into sellable pieces and driving around the scrappies looking for buyers. It it'd be easier, cheaper and more profitable to just go to France and back doing a baccy run! There's also an agricultural college here with a massive amount of farmers diesel that'd be easier to nick and shift.

[IMG] God knows, the way things work around here it'll probably be after xmas. It only happened today so there's not much info about it yet. When the local rag is out on Friday it'll probably have something in there, if it does I'll try and post a scan of the story. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief hours later, I mean - who the hell steals a phone mast! [IMG] I'll find out who was involved over the next few days just so that I can go up to them and laugh at their blatant stupidity!

They still have red diesel around there? All my sources dried up.
That reminds me I will have to confirm but making diesel for personal usage is 2500 litres per year, going to have to play around.

If I really cared I could build a transmitter quite easily but I suspect taking down a common communication method might gain me a visit from the police who are not police.

"France and back doing a baccy run"
It seems all the cool kids go to Belgium these days (I was in an otherwise tiny little village just across the border a while back and have not seen security that tight in quite some time). Still I am impressed, profit from such a thing is damn low around here there are so many going for it (the token 5th guy is normally unpaid).
