A brand new firmware update is available for the console, bringing it to version number 5.5.5. The thread literally says it's 5.5.5U. So I think it is just for the US units. Eh, Europe may follow suit later.

Thats just a standard in the industry the PS3 and Xbox360 have both gotten an update within the past 2 years or so.

If I recall correctly, PS3 updates in particular have to do with updating support for Blu-Ray disks. Xbox? Not sure, tbh.
