What bothers me the most is when you have users coming to these forums, follow some instructions to install homebrew and they think they "hacked" their systems let alone have the title of hacker. To the end users we are just modders who modify our systems to behave in a way that was not manufacturer intended. To me a hacker is someone who has the knowledge of 2-3 programming languages and uses them to break into the file system permissions in order to run their own scripts. A hacker has an understanding how a system actually works so that they can gain control and do what they will with it.

There are many modders on this site but very few are actual hackers. My two cents.

Well there are software hackers and there are hardware hackers. Software hackers are more common. End users who hack their systems are not hackers, they are... end users.

Meh. They modified their systems using hacks available to the public. The shorthand term is hacked. Whether you agree or not.

Seems like a very arbitrary definition.

How do you know that the people you're talking about don't?

Why do you care what word people use to describe themselves? Why do you want everyone to use your restrictive and arbitrary definition?

By definition a hacker is: "a person who uses computers to gain unauthorized access to data."

It's a pretty broad definition, but by this definition, anyone who has dumped their OTP is a hacker.

I think what you mean is developer, which is someone who has actually developed an exploit/modification.

Because I don't believe someone with basic reading comprehension is on the same tier as the likes of Smea, Yellows8, etc

    Deal with it.

Good for you, but that doesn't change the definition of words just because you want them to change.

As mentioned earlier, Smea et al. are developers, which seems to be the word you're actually describing in your first post. I suggest you read a dictionary, and stop trying to feel smug about yourself by attacking end-users of homebrew.

Wasn't it called cracking when you remove DRM from software?

I'd rather not be ignorant as yourself. I'll use words and their definitions properly thank you.

The only definitions you seem to be using are ones that you made up yourself. Feel free to use those listed by myself and other members in this thread.

Why bother to make this thread if all you're going to do is attack anyone who disagrees with you?

Because you prefer to muddy the waters and blend it together. If thats your opinion then fine but I wouldnt call everyone on this site a hacker, thats simply incorrect.

I think you'll find that no-one ever claimed that. Good try putting words in my mouth though.

My point was the same as what VinLark's is:

If you dont care then why are you in this thread. Why dont you try to come up with a constructive argument for your side rather than "omgesh who carzzz"

Not trying to bash you but seeing that response makes it hard to give back a serious response in return.

Because you seem committed to attacking both regular end-users of homebrew as well as everyone who doesn't abide by your personal definitions.

As I asked before, why bother to make this thread if you're just going to attack anyone who disagrees?

I made quite the argument actually, you're just doing everything you can to avoid it, which is why you're resorting to childish attacks.

"Not trying to bash you but I'm going to keep attacking you so I don't actually have to address the points you're making."

Remember, the onus is on you to actually make a case for why your definitions are worth using.

Hacker is a title that can ruin your life trust me. Whenever I hack a console I try to keep it as subtle as possibly like for example I changed everything that was red in Rebug to blue (really hard because I could find no presets online had to make it myself) so no one would notice. Friends hold back adding me online cause they think I can hack them, but there isn't too much I can do. I am a developer for PS3 and I make sure no one considers me a "hacker". Just a developer, but nothing can stop it. Now while this isn't really life, it can lead to irl situations.
